Setting the home page

I am spending Christmas at my brother's house. (An ice storm knocked the power out at my place Wednesday night. The electric company doesn't expect to get power back on until Sunday night. Meanwhile it is really cold - the windchill is supposed to be 25 below tonight.) I have been trying to set Google as his homepage (go to Google/tools/internet options/general/homepage/use current/apply/OK). It seems to set Google as the home page but once the computer times out it goes back to the home page that had been set before I changed it to Google. Why is it doing this and how can I fix it?
