Look what is looking at me today.

I purchased this Variegated Hibiscus Red Snow Queen off Ebay at Thanksgiving time. This is my fourth flower aren't they lovely, especially here at Christmas.

My question is I am still loosing leaves, should I cut the buds off before they have time to bloom or leave it the way it is? Or would I be smart to not let the flowers bloom and that way the plant could have more of the nutrients.

I am having a similar problem. My leaves are turning yellow. Do you know if there is anything I can do or is this natural. Also, looks like you have pugs. I had one for 14 1/2 years. I had to put him away last year. Soooooooooo sad.

Indoor plants yellowing? I just strip the bad leaves and wait for spring unless all the leaves are going, then I would probably try to increase light and humidity. Outdoor plants yellowing, I don't know, but make sure they are not getting too much phosphorus, it can poison them. I only use hibiscus fertilizers on hibiscus.

Has anyone tried growing Hybiscus from seeds under lights and if so how well do they do to get started that way?
Does anyone know if these plants are hardy in zone 6? It was on the top of my head, thought I'd ask since I was on the right thread and I haven't even looked that one up in my books yet.
Thanks,

eddiegirl:
I have started hibiscus from seeds this year. I am proud to say they have done really will. I'm not much of a gardener just really getting started since retiring. But they have done great. I received some cutting from a DG'er for Jungle Red, and only one cutting has made it. But I did take some pods off one plant and let them dry, removed the seeds and planted them, and now I have 13 of them growing. They have just came through the ground. I soak the seeds over night in water and h202 then plant them and place on a heat mat in a covered domed container and wait. It has taken these seeds about 2 weeks to get to where they are today. But the first part of Jan. I planted yellow, white, fireball and moy grande and have had real good luck with them as well. The yellow did the best. I think I have about 3 times more of them. Maybe the seeds were fresher. I got most of them off EBay last fall.

When May comes I may be in some trouble, with all the hibiscus I have now and I have more coming from the Tropical Hibiscus Coop. I do have 2 tropical that I over wintered and 1 doesn't look to good (may be dead), and another is about ready to bloom. Then I have the one that I have in the picture up above. I have got to start looking for some large pots to plant all of them in for summer. Oh yea forgot to say I also got started on Brugs this year and I have 22 of them that will need to go out in May. I would imagine all anyone will see this old gal doing this summer is walking around with a hose in her hand watering. But of course if they all do good then I will be smiling big and enjoying all the beautiful flowers.
