Great Collection.
Are these all planted in the ground?

Don, lol, heck no. I don't have much ground room, most of my collection is in pots.

I agree, what a great collection. Mark are we supposed to fertilize passies? This year, I put five one-gallon contianers of various passies inbetween two raised beds, then put a whole bunch of mulch/bark to completely cover them to overwinte them. so far they have not died. The Vitifolia in the ground in another area looks dead, but the lavendar lady is still green. The maypop, Incense, and Caruela (sp) that are also in the ground are doing great. The Ruby Glow, Frederick, Vitifolia and Alata Passies that are against the wall by the kitchen window in pots are also doing well and Ruby Glow has two blooms on it now (they look tired and wind blown) but they opened up. This is the first year for me.

Do you have any in the ground?

and one more question regarding your collection, I did not see Citrina in there and was wondering if it has any bad qualities. I found one this summer and I just love it, it is still blooming here and lots of green growth. Will this one do well in the ground?

edited: to say don't forget to add me to the line for your site when it goes up.. nice work on there too.

Wonderful collection, Mark. I wish I cound get some of the Tacsonias to grow for me here.

what beautiful pictures. I planted two passi vines in the ground in the Spring, one red and the other blue (don't know names). They never bloomed. Anyone have any suggestions? The orange butterflies were abundant, layed lots of eggs, got lots of cats and more beautiful butterflys. Sure would like to see them flower. The red one has been completely killed by frost. The blue one has a few green leaves left, so it should bounce back. I may buy more plants and leave them in pots.

Beautiful pictures, Mark. I've seen them before, and they are gorgeous.

Purplepetunia, it is hard to say why your passifloras didn't bloom without knowing what species they are, what conditions they are in, and whether they were grown from seeds or cuttings, but if your blue one (probably P. caerulea) is getting enough sunlight, I'm sure it will bloom for you in the spring. Passifloras are considered tropical or subtropical vines, and most of them are only hardy to Zone 10. A few of the red passifloras are particularly cold sensitive and will die at temperatures below 45. Yours is probably P. caerulea is one of the few that is hardy to Zone 6 so that is probably what you have. You could also have Passiflora incarnata, which is also hardy to Zone 6. I think those are the only two that would survive in your zone.

Antoinette, I have read that fertilizer only promotes foliage and growth at the cost of flowers so I don't fertilize mine. You will have to watch out for new passifloras popping up from the roots. I hear that P. caerulea and P. incarnata will spread by underground runners, and they could prove to be invasive in your zone. I don't have them for this reason. I have about a dozen different passifloras, and all but two are in the ground.

Thanks Clare,

You know that the morifolia came back with a vengence, it is growing from the bottom stems of the plant and lots of branches. Today, I sorted out the vines that were tangled together and Frederick, Ruby Glow, an Alata from seed, and Caerulea are still green and growing. The Vitfolia, Incense, Incarnata, Lavendar Lady and a couple of others have lost all their leaves. I also just got Lady Margaret from Logees, they were out last time. One from Kartuz did not make it, it was looking bad when it got here though.

All of my seedlings died (I think that I did not remove them from the heat mats soon enough). I don't have anymore Alba seeds, But plan to start some other seeds from Mark and the vitifolia fruit I got (the seeds are beige looking on that one). Is that normal for the vitifolia? I have to put all of mine into the ground, right now, only the two invasive ones are inCaerulea and Incarnata, plus Lavender Lady and one vitifolia that looks dead. The other two Vitifolias are in containers along with the rest. lol.. Caerulea and Incarnata. The Caerulea has not spread at all, and the Incarnata has had two runners already pop up in this first year. This is going to be a great year for the butterflies and I am so anxious for blooms. Clare, Do you plant any of yours close together in the ground?

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Hi Antoinette, I'm sorry about your losses! My Lady Margaret died this past winter. I'm not sure why because I think it was outside last winter and did okay. It might have gotten too wet and too cold at the same time. I don't have Vitfolia, but I think I had a small vine last winter which didn't make it. Those red ones are pretty cold senstive. I have some new ones this year, and just yesterday when I was moving a trellis, I accidently broke off a main branch of P. sprucei which had flower buds on it! I am so mad about that, but I am trying to root the cuttings. Yes, I have my Passifloras a couple of feet apart only because I am so limited for space! My goal is to have six or seven all along the wall on the east side of the house. It looks terrible right now, but it will look better when it fills out. My Lavender Lady is on the other side, against the house, climbing all over a bougainvilla.
