wifi and bluetooth

I have a hx4700 pocket pc, and have had a devil of a time getting these set up. Even the techies in the store had trouble. Now it'll only work when in it's cradle connected to my pc.

One question that no one has asked me, and I'm kind of embarassed to mention it, do I need a wireless router in my home?

And can I have a basic explanation of what bluetooth is and what it does.

I think the hx4700 might be smarter than I am

Thanks in advance for any and all helpful suggestions (and snickers, LOL, I'm laughing at myself for not thinking of the wireless router before now.)
