Mis-labeled Wal-Mart Amaryllis!

Lakemont, GA(Zone 8a)

I don't know why I trusted Wal-Mart again, but I bought a 'Red Lion' amaryllis for Christmas forcing. I got one last year and it was an absolutely gorgeous bright red color.
This one has been blooming for a couple of weeks and it is obviously not what it is labeled. It is a beautiful "ORANGEISH" color.

I don't know much about these plants so I haven't a clue as to what it is.

Sorry, I don't have a photo either.... any guesses???

Hi, Berrygirl--Here is a link to the Amaryllis Bulb Co. that has pictured a few orangish hippeastrums....although the Walmart bulb might be a growers 'experiment' or extra or something else, too, I guess. The Red Lion they have pictured does look like a 'rich red' not an orange!

Amaryllis are really getting popular and the hybridizers are coming out with all kinds of new 'looks' 'not just for Christmas, anymore' and I guess yours may be one of the new ones....

Berrygirl, I was told by a sewing machine expert that the reason Wally World is so cheap is that they buy the 'lowest' quality 'everyhing' from manufacture's,,, I bought a used sewing machine from this expert and it is fine, my Wally World bought machine I donated to charity (it was a lousy machine, and 1 year old, nothing but trouble) and I bought a 'supposed' Climbing Rose from Walmart 2 years ago, it has never made an effort to climb anything. So , I guess the old saying holds true....you get what you pay for. I have however had luck with some other plants bought at Wally World and have been very pleased, so now I just think when buying from them you may have a 'mystery' plant on your hands!

I don't know about walmart but i od know that oneo f our local home depot stores had some amaryllis that are not labled right. The bulbs are planted in little red metal buckets with and under planting of what looks like rye grass. All of the lables in the buckets are labled as being red. Well one was in full bloom and was a red and white splotched double flower.
I have bought two from wally mart this season and thus far only one has bloomed but it was what is was labled as. I have 4 amaryllis for forcing in my gh and they seem to be growing very very slow for soe reason. may be that it is too cold for them in there.

Thanks all for the replies and the link, Tabasco.

Mom, I emphathize with you about the wally world roses. I bought some from them spring 2003. One was supposed to be Mr. Lincoln [deep red] and the other a yellow climber. Both are Pepto-Bismol pink!!!!
I knew better than to buy the amaryllis but I had bought one last year and it was the right color. Even though this amaryllis is orange, I do like it though!

I will never buy plants from them again- no matter how cheap they are!

I wonder if it's true or my imagination: The Walmart on I-10 and Fry Road in Houston is superb. One of the managers happens to be a MG, so I notice efforts in putting plants in the right location for display, watering, removal of dead leaves, etc.. Everything I've bought at this store has been a success, including trees. On the other hand, there a couple of stores, one old and one recently opened, and their stuff is pretty the day it's put out and atrocious thereafter. I wouldn't buy weeds from these places!! While I think there is little debate on the ruthless tactics Walmart uses in dealing w/ vendors, I also think there is something to be said for management style on a store-by-store basis. What I call the pyramid effect. If the top guy is considerate, smart, (add whatever adjective) he will likely be surrounded by likes. Look around if you shop at more than one store and see what I'm talking about. Merry X/mas everybody.
