I need some help explaining something

My neighbor wants to buy virus and firewall protection. I told her that I use AVG Free Edition and also Zone Alarm free edition.

She asked me how can it be good if it is free. I shrugged my shoulders and said, "I dunno, just know I like the program and it came with good remarks with others who use it". So, with that said, can someone give me a real answer..?
