picturelady? re: shipping to US-Canadian site Brugs etc

Norfolk, VA(Zone 8a)

I think it was picturelady who asked about the Canadian site "Brugmansias etc" if they ship to the US.
I am sorry to tell you they emailed back with the answer "no"

I know my guy came from Canada, but the co here in the US just used that Canadian source. So I know it CAN be done, but whatever they are willing to do.

When you want to import brugs from another country you must have an import license, post entry quarrantine papers and purchase a phytosanitary certificate which the nursery that is going to ship the brugs gets from their country. Then your brugs go to a Port of Entry and may or may not make it to your house, then you're out the price of the brugs and the price of shipping, you get mad at the supplier because they're not going to ship again free of charge because it costs them money for another phyto(they're one time use, even if the plants are lost in shipment), more shipping plus the plants they might have to send twice. It's a lot of hassle. Then when you finally get the brugs, you've got to quarrantine them for two years and be inspected from time to time by the US dept of ag unless the person shipping them is willing to go to the trouble of proving that their brugs have been grown in Canada for two or more years. Personally, I don't think it's worth the hassle(I no longer ship to other countries). Of course that's just my opinion of why someone might not want to ship to the US from another country.

thank you for the info
I am sure this explains why most growers/importers can't afford to do this.

Mine came from Van Bourgondien (dutch bulbs) and there was no delay and no quarrantine. According to your info, I guess that means the plants were already grown in Canada 2+ years and the cuttings were then taken from them.

they sent healthy cuttings that became gorgeous plants. I guess the big drawback would be lack of selection. They have red, white, peach, and yellow, and that's it- just the four choices.

I've bought wholesale from Holland. I asked them why the plants I got didn't have to be quarrantined. They said they are like pre inspected, like our customs warehouses down here and all the paperwork is handled by the importer(in my case it was a broker in NY). The company I bought from was huge, and van Bourgondien is a large company too.
