Starting a Co-op...

Milton, VT(Zone 4a)

Anyone like heuchera(coral bells) htbrids as much as I do? Not to mention Heucherella and Tiarella.
Any Admin's interested in starting a Co-op? I can't start a Co-op and am not sure if I could Administer one
anyways, but would be willing to help if somone starts one!

The following sites offer a nice selection:
The Primrose Path - http://www.theprimrosepath.com/index.htm
Terra Nova Nurseries - http://www.terranovanurseries.com/pages/plantsH2.html
Plant Delights Nursery.Inc. - http://www.plantdelights.com/Catalog/Current/page33.html

I know hallsons has a bunch too!!! to cold to even think about gardening today!

Milton, VT(Zone 4a)

Too cold to think about gardening! Isn't that what keeps us all warm inside!!! Actualy it is quite cold here in VT as well, although quite sunny thus far. I'm sure if a Co-op were to be started we would have to get moving on it ASAP for the sellers to be able to prepair our order for spring. It seems that retail sales are of larger plants and cost much more as well, while the wholesale plants would be plugs and cost less than a buck a piece. For the latter we would need to buy large quantities, but for that price I'd buy larger quantities.

Crossville, TN(Zone 6b)

I'm in if someone starts one.

Modesto, CA(Zone 8b)

So many Indians and no chiefs! Count me as another Indian.....Heuchera's are one of my passions but working 10 hour days prohibits me from becomming a good Chief!

Milton, VT(Zone 4a)

Maybe, if accepted, I can become the Chief in January if need be, but I'd like to share the task the first time around if possible.

Northwest, MO(Zone 5a)

I would also be interested in ordering some of these. Deb

Coopersburg, PA(Zone 6b)

how does one go about organizing a co-op? does someone have lists of contacts/nurseries that are interested in doing these? or does a person just contact nurseries themselves and try and procure the best deal?

Milton, VT(Zone 4a)

My guess is that it would be the latter, but maybe a veteran Co-op'er will shed some light for us!

SW, WI(Zone 4b)

I might be interested, too, (in purchasing) but have never participated in a Co-op here on DG.
Can you give me a little info on how it works?
Can I buy just a few, or am I obligated to buy 'many'?
TIA
Nan

There's a Co-Op Primer under the "Extras" Tab at the top of the home page. It's 4 pages, here's the link:

New Hyde Park, NY(Zone 7a)

I am new at all of this and never heard of co-op till now, I would love to be an indian.

Palmyra, IL(Zone 5b)

I've been e-mailing companies to do a daylily co-op.They seem to try to work with us.But that's a whole other ball game.Anyway I'm in on this. I'd love a few new additions to my garden. Thanks,Jody

Des Moines, IA(Zone 5a)

I would be interested as well, I have more shade than sun in my yard. All my sunny plants go along the fence next to the drive where the tree shade does'nt get that far over. All our shade trees are on the south side but its ok, keeps the house cool all summer!

Coshocton, OH(Zone 6a)

count me in!

Milton, VT(Zone 4a)

You people are getting me excited about this. Another question would be, Plugs or Plants! Plants may still run at least $3-$4 a piece while plugs could cost as little as .50 - .75 each! I guess it all depends on weather they can be shipped saftely twice. Do any of the "Chiefs" have any experience?

Palmyra, IL(Zone 5b)

We need a Chief.I'd volunteer but I'm already asking Dave if I can do a daylily co-op.I don't know if he'd let me do two of them or not.Hopefully someone will be Chief.lol.I've have experence with large bulb swaps, ect. But not a co-op.Only difference would be to start packing and shipping the day they come in.lol.Jody

Milton, VT(Zone 4a)

JodyC,

Please make sure I am in on the daylily co-op!!!!

I will get busy calling/emailing suppliers first thing in January to see what they can offer us, but until then I'm booked up as I suspect most of us are. I will begin reading the Co-op info before then however.

The company Primrose Path has wholesale for groups but those are tissue cultures and while they may be .70 each they are only about one inch tall, barley and have to be ordered in hundreds. They will require special handling and each tissue plantlet will have to spend a couple of weeks potted by someone before they can even think about being transplanted and shipped. It takes 3 months before that plantlet will fill a 2.5" pot it says and sevral wil be lost along the way.

Plant Delights might sale cheaper, but doubt very much it wil be much of a discount.

Terra Nova is another tissue culture and experimental hybrizing place. I tried to get into the wholesale section to see what those prices would be, but I have to call tomorrow and get a password and let ya know how much theirs are.

I checked my growers and it's a to 14 week from order toplugs and then there is a minimun of 6 flats, 32 plants in a flat of one variety plus $5.00 box charge and since these are a bit bigger plants the Big Burly there is an additional $1.00 per flat packaging charge.

I wil continue to look around for ya and see if if anybody else I know is cheaper. Terra Nova has some very beautiful and new interesting cultivars.

I will be watching!!! I love Terra Nova plant's!!!

I just have to say good luck with some of the new ones from Terra Nova. I put my orders in long ago. I know that all those to die for ones are sold out for wholesale. They can be found Retail at a few places. I wish you all good luck. And GOD Bless who ever gets to be the Chief. Sounds like a lot of work.

Lenexa, KS(Zone 6a)

kayaker - I'd be willing to help you do a coop if you're hesitant to do it on your own the first go round. Feel free to contact me by email and we can discuss what you need help with the most.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

I am stil trying to get a password to the wholesale site for Terra Nova. I have tried callign when I get in fromschool, but all I get is a recording that they busy right now and leave a message. Still tryign though.

Worcester, MA(Zone 5b)

Wow,just seen this!
I would love to also buy from Terra Cotta, but you need so many,I think the last time I checked, within 2 years, they stated you can split a tray with 2 plant varieties, but thats so many.I want so many not seen here, for zone 5,esp.some of those ferns!Primroses are also hard to find, diffrent varieties anyway,I am looking for these, very difficult also!Gingers for my zone,etc..Count me in,the nurseries you speak of are very expensive otherwise, please keep me informed, this would be a great one!

Just an "FYI" from the daylily co-op I just hosted. You shouldn't just read what they have on their website regarding wholesale and think that's all you/we can get. For instance, the supplier of my co-op offeres wholesale to the public, but you have to buy 7 of ONE cultivar to get the discount. For purposes of my co-op, he agreed to not hold me to that 7 of each rule. They just had to be cultivars he had already denoted as discounted for 2005. The other thing is that sometimes even if they don't OFFER wholesale on a regular basis, they will negotiate with a group if you just ask.

As to suppliers, it looks like few have been mentioned already. But you can also use Watchdog and type in the type of plant you want to offer. Then just check the rating of each one you find. From there, I would just email them and be short and to the point. If they show interest, email them the link to the co-op primer. It's hit or miss! I tried to do one for glads but only 1 person responded asking what a co-op was. I sent the primer link and never heard back. I think another DGer is looking into a glad co-op and hopefully she will have better luck!

Good luck and I hope someone can get this one up and running. Sorry but I don't think I have more than one a year in me or I would do it. I too have lots and lots of shade!!!!

Jamie
