It is definitely looking like the season to be jolly. We've had about a foot since 4:30 and it is still snowing, though lightly now. Stan came back from the woods and said it was just beautiful with the branches all laden. It was a sad trip, Meg, our 9 year old red holstein with attitude, died this morning. She had had a nice red heifer in November and went down with milk fever. We didn't expect her to come back from that, but she did. The last few days, she had been suffering from ketosis, but was responding to glucose paste. Saturday night, Stan went in to put the milker on her, and she dropped like a stone, nearly caught him a good one. He thought she was dead then, looked a lot like a heart attack, but an hour later she had revived and gotten up. He got her out of her stall and she's been in the middle of the floor eating hay, but this morning she was comatose and when Stan went out after breakfast, she was gone.
At lunch, we got a phone call from the across the road neighbor that the heifers that are still outside were heading down the east driveway and into the road. Stan was getting ready for a doctors appointment, so I slipped into my insulated boots and ran out without a coat and called them. They came running back with a look that said, "Well, the gate was open, what do you expect us to do?" Stan had forgotten to shut it. He came out in boots AND coat, so I let him take care of the gate closing and ran back in - it was a very brisk interlude in the day!
I'm working on some table runners for Stan's mom today. We found a piece of material with cardinal panels on it that I've cut up, rearranged and added some flying bird pieced squares to. I've also taken two other panels and put them in some Christmassy looking paisely as if they were old photos. I'm not sure who that's going to.
Guess I'd better get back to work.
