A question for Brugcrazy, Liz and the other Bruggie experts.

I was just reading a post in the Brug & Friends forum where initially a Brug Newbie was asking about her newly acquired cuttings and such. In the conversation she enquired about a true Red Brug. In her answer, Brugie said...Jan, you can find a red sanguinea brug, but I doubt it would grow for you in Florida. They like a milder climate... Milder climate!!! This woman was from a 9B zone. How much milder can it get and where? What is the differnce between this "Sanguinea" and a normal Brug?

I'm not an expert Donna but I've read that a Sanquinea needs a cooler climate because of where it originates.

I have the book called Brugmansia and Datura by Ulrike and Hans-Georg Preissel out from the library and this is what it says on the subject:
It is found along the mountain slopes of the Andes from northern Colombia to northern Chile at altitutes of 2000-3000 m. In this species, temperatures above 22 C seem to inhibit flower development. New buds do continue to form, but when the temperatures are high, the buds only reach an average size of about 1cm before they dry off and fall. Where the average temperature is 10-16 C, on the other hand, flower development is expected to be good.

Apparently it doesn't grow well in Florida but does well in the Pacific Northwest. Jeanne was telling me that the plants only do well for a couple of years though.

But Sandy, Brugie was stating above that a red sanguinea would require milder climate than that of 9B Florida. That was what i was stupified about.

Oostburg, WI(Zone 5b)

milder perhaps meaning, not so hot at FL? just an uneducated guess. Ask Brugie.

Castlegar, BC(Zone 6b)

Oh, never thought about it that way. Maybe.

Brugie aka Shirley Morr meant that it was too hot in Florida to grow sanguinea. Sanguineas do grow well here but need to be kept in the shade. Unfortunately the plants tend to virus after a couple of years. It is best to grow the plant from seed.

Thanks Jeanne. I understand now. Just jumped to the higher zone conclusion. Makes sense now. Glad I didn't ask Shirely on the Brug forum, they'd all wondered where this dozy Canuck had come from! It's a lot easier showing my ignorance on this forum! LOL

Sorry Donna, I guess I didn't really help did I?

Hey, no problem Sandy. I was just as confused. Easy to do when your mind is going off in one direction. Lately, I have found mine can't go in many directions at the same time! LOL

Thanks anyway! :D
