Anyone want to try this?

Earlier today, on another thread I mentioned a cookbook I recently bought called the Victory Cookbook. It's full of recipes from the time of rationing in the UK due to WW2, from it's implementation in 1940 to 1954.

Here's the adventurous bit.

Beetroot Pudding! yes it's a sweet dessert.

(measurements in imperial rather than US)

6oz of wheatmeal flour
half teaspoon of baking powder
half oz fat (solid cooking)
1oz sugar
4oz of finely grated cooked or raw beetroot
3 or 4 tablespoons of milk
Flavouring (doesn't say what sort, any will probably do)

1. mix the baking powder with the flour in a large bowl
2. Rub in the fat
3. Add the sugar and beetroot
4. Mix all the ingredients with the milk to a soft cake consistancy
5. Mix in the flavouring if you choose to use it.

Once thoroughly mixed turn the lot into a greased baking tin and bake immediately in a moderate oven for 35-40 minutes.

According to the book, this tastes equally good hot or cold, read that how you like.

Anyone willing to give it a try? Apparently the sweetness of the beetroot almost eliminates the need for the sugar and it looks less full of calories than carrot cake.
