I just went upstairs to the sunroom to water my Brugs. On one of them I found a cluster of 4 leaves that had these small little eggs, whitish yellow. Tiny, but you could SEE them. Sicked me out - I pulled the whole cluster of leaves off and threw it in the garbage outside before even thinking of taking a picture.
Has anyone run into this or have links that might help identify what you might think it is? They almost made the leaf have a crystalization look - so very many of them, all clustered together. Totally gross.
Sorry I didn't get a pic! Any good guesses would help!
Weird Whitish/Yellowish Eggs?????
I have no clue. Sorry!
some kind of aphid? I really don't know. But you are going to want to wash all the leaves really well in warm (not hot) running water. Maybe put them in the bathtub? See if you can lick the problem that way before you try something stronger.
I had a green cat on a variegated spider plant that I had brought into the house from the garden, and while I knew he was there, evidenced from the poop he left below the plant, I could never find him. I immersed the whole plant in water, searched and searched. Nothing! Last night a slight movement caught my eye and I finally got him -- the little sucker! Victory was mine!!!
He's so cute !!!!!
Doesn't that make your worst day worth it ?
Moments like that make everything better.
Thanks for a great pic for the day.
Barb
Karrie . . it sounds like aphids to me also.
LOL....I am so glad you got him Gretchen.
Sometimes I stick my hand under a pot or in the foliage and one of those great little lizards runs over it....scares the wadding out of me, but I love them. They keep the bugs down!!!
Barb -- I had tons of these little Anoles in my garden last summer. And a few found their way inside, and they can be real fun to try to catch! But we always managed to get them safely returned to the garden LOL.
Frannie -- me too! It was really starting to drive me nuts...
Barb -- here's another friend that I had an abundance of last summer. They were so ugly, they were cute:
I love tree frogs. Would catch them sitting in the brugs quite often, but really loved it when they talked in the evening or walked across one of the windows on the house. Pretty cool critters.
We have several different varieties, but this particular type loved the brugs -- I've never seen them walk across windows -- that must be really cool! We do have some funny little gekko that walk across the windows at night, kind of a flesh colored little night-creature.
I wonder if they eat the brug bugs? We used to have frogs, when we got rid of our pond, they all left.
Oh yes, the frogs, toads, lizards and maybe even snakes eat bugs. That's why I love having them in the garden. Another excellent reason to use organic ferts. They may not be there now Kell, because you have no bugs to eat. I'd rather have beautiful brugs with no bug holes, but since I'm so far out in the country, I guess I'll take the frogs, etc.
Karrie -- I'm so sorry we (I) hijacked your thread!
Karrie, I haven't seen the eggs, but I have had a Datura that the leaves turned almost translucent like someone on here said. Was that what you meant by crystalization? I, like you, threw the plant out before I looked real good.
Do any of you have an answer for this?
I really like the little critters too, but not in the house.
Jeanette
I didn't throw the plant away. Only one set of four leaves had the eggs, and I just pulled those leaves off and threw them in the garbage OUTSIDE, far away from the plants, so that hopefully they will die in the cold or get incinerated at the dump.
Crystal meaning they look like little crystals - but definitely like eggs, almost the size of small white rice (close to that shape as well).
I can't bring those plants into the bathtub - they are clear upstairs, my back and neck can't do that, and hubby has the flu, plus I'd hate to ask him for this. He'd probably tell me to throw in the towel on Brugs al-together.
I think maybe I will try that malathion on them (I know many of you just hate that word) but I don't think I'm going to have much of a choice this time around - it's that or probably lose the plants.
Thanks for the ideas. Aphids, huh? WEIRD! I had problems with spider mites last summer, on them, but these eggs look too big to be that.
On the ABADS site, Poppysue posted some insect pics. The pic at the very bottom of the listed pics looked very similar to what I saw, but I'm not sure how "blown up" she had that pic. There was no label under the pic to say what it was.
p.s. Don't worry about "hi-jacking" my thread. It helps ME, lol! If it weren't for that, my thread would have probably been buried on this very busy forum. You're just helping me keep it at the top where more people just logging on will see it and hopefully have answers! :-)
not at all! :-) Pretty Flower! Datura?
Yes ma'am. A Black Currant Swirl. I had so many Dat plant last summer...
Karrie, you are right. I forgot Poppysue had the critter section in ABADS. I will have to go look and see what she would do with the mites instead of using the systmic like I am using.
You also could try the 1 tbsp each of peroxide and dish soap to a spritzer bottle of distilled water. That would get the aphids and then just take the leaves with the eggs off. Do you see any sign of what laid the eggs?
Or you could have Gretchen send you one of those lizards. Or if you could stand having it in your house you could send for a Praying Mantis. Sorry, I am being facitious. Can't spell either.
Jeanette
I didn't see any bugs!
Trust me, they're lurking in there somewhere. Try Jeanette's idea of the spray bottle with palmolive, peroxide and water. That may do the trick for you! If it happens to reappear, be sure to take and post an image for us :)
I don't have palmolive. I have some Western Family brand (generic, kind of, but good) anti-bacterial dish soap. Can I use that with peroxide & water?
Camera will be ready should I see this again.
I've always heard not to use anti- bacterial soap.
Well - I have to go to the grocery store in the morning, so I'll pick up some palmolive and keep it with my garden supplies. :-) Thanks for letting me know that - I've always wondered.........
Karrie I sure hope you can get your bug problem solved.
I like the idea of peroxide water and soap. That one sounds safe!
Spraying Malathion in house I just don't think that is a safe one.
I've got nuts over bugs once before just about killed myself with the chemicals. Please be careful.
You can replace a plant but not your lungs!!!

Kauffman:
So pretty the Datura-I love the frog too I have them here.
I don't have your lizzard though. We have the blue tails and one we reffer to our dinasours or bark lizzards. It's fun watching them durring mating season they rare up against each other sort of territorial I guess.
Durring the summers we have to watch out for there nest sites unfortunately it's usually in the mulch or sawdust piles.
I'm trying to start some Datura seed in the Make shift Tobacco bed.
Barb
Thanks Barb. You might want to wait a month or two on your Datura seeds. They grow really fast and get pretty big. Unless you have plenty of room to house them before you can transplant them to the garden... Just a thought :)
I just couldn't wait all those pretty pictures!!!
I'll find the room .I have been giving other plants away for Christmas presents to make room.Brugs,Ichromas,Daturas.I just can't wait til spring and summer for all those blooms.
I totally understand!!!
Here are some pics of the nasty eggs I was talking about. (The other night it was very late, and I didn't search the rest of the plant(s) well enough.
Notice they are on both the inside out outside of the leaves, and some are larger than the others.
Also, I'm getting ready to head up to the store to get that palmolive, and I was wondering if I should take a small basin of warm soapy water/peroxide solution and bathe them with a wet soft cloth to get the eggs off and leave the leaves on. Whatcha think?
Karrie
1st pic
You have aphids, Karrie. They aren't hard to get rid of. Just use the home-made spray and that should do the trick. You might have to apply it a couple of times to get rid of all.

Good luck :)
what about soaping them down with a cloth, as I mentioned up above?????
Yup...I think that will work fine. You'll just have to be careful to get them all, and rinse them down the drain...
Geeez - sure glad Russ is out Christmas shopping! He'd be really upset if he knew I'd brought aphids into the house! At least they are isolated up in that room. These are going bye bye! Off to the store! Thanks Gretchen!
Just all part of gardening...you're welcome!
My next door neighbor that works at Costco says they have preying manthis all over the store. I should send her on a hunt for me. Russ would just LOVE them in the house, lol!
I bet they'd stay right on your plants. You keep the door closed to that room don't you? I'd love to have some in my greenhouse!
Yes - the door is kept closed MOST of the time, but I highly doubt I'll get the preying manthis. I would like to have them for outdoors next spring/summer, though!
I hear you!
