belonging in this forum but here goes. I was wondering if anyone knew of a dwarf magnolia that could be grown in a pot. I really would like to have a magnolia but I don't have a lot of room for trees. Not only that but I'm not sure how winter hardy they would be in zone 8. I've always wanted one. Any info on a pot size magnolia would be great.
Thanks
Robin
Not sure about Magnolia's
what size pot are you talking about? Maybe a possibility would be a magnolia soulanginiana aka saucer magnolia. the one the blooms first and gets leaves later. I don't think it's a dwarf, but I think you can probably restrain the growth by using a pot. Even then I would expect you'd have to use one of those pretty big patio planters. Just an idea.
also, it your heart set on a magnolia? other options could be brugs, plumeria.
Well I was thinking about something that would fit in a 15" pot. I just have always liked magnolias but have resisted buying one because they get so big and need so much room for roots. I've seen the magnolia you mentioned. Those are so pretty. Maybe someone in the container forum has done this. Hadn't thought about that till just now.
As for brugs and Plumies I have brug cuttings all over my living room :) and I have some plumeria's that I'm growing from seed.
Magnolias are used often as bonsai so I don't see why you can't grow on in a pot with good results. Just make sure you have good drainage.
P.S. Why would a magnolia have any problems surviving a zone 8 winter??
P.S. A magnolia should do just fine in a Zone 8 winter . . . considering I'm at the other end of Zone 8 and have a big ole Southern Mag in my front yard.
Sorry, but I'm not aware of any dwarf varieties or something that would adapt to a container. I see Magnolias as "needs-a-whole-yard-for-itself" kinds of trees... like Live Oaks.
the saucer magnolia must adapt to pots 'cause i've seen them in magazines. i don't know about the regular magnolia. I'm w/ dogzilla that they are 'needs a whole yard for itself' kinda tree. zone 8 should be no problem for any magnolia
According to this link (discussed in another thread in the Container Gardening forum) Star Magnolias (Magnolia stellata) can be grown in a pot.

Everyone thank you all for the information. I will do a search through the container forum and see what all I can learn. It sounds very promising.
