Basil and slugs

Olympia, WA

It seems slugs prefer basil to almost anything - bypassing all slug "food" (aka: bait) to reach the leaves...but I "think" I have hit on a slug proof solution!

I have surrounded the container with sawdust, having noticed that petunias so treated have been left alone, as well.

Do any of the readers of this forum have this problem w/ slugs and/or have any other suggestions?

Thanks

I've just put out some basil seedlings and the slugs seems to have left them alone :) The only problem i seem to have with them is that they have gone a bit yellow, what is causing this? will they go greener when they settle in? They're not dry and my soil is well drained and gritty..

Yellowing is not a good sign - but a basil expert I am not.....if the plant has been established for a while, so that it has put its own roots down since the transplanting (if you transplanted it) - then it "might" be that it is lacking a key nutrient. You might find some answers on this page:

That is mighty fine news!!!!!! Good for you, and good for the basil!!!

Piucking slugs off the plants and dropping them in a cup of salt will work wonders. or you can put a circle of wood ash around each plant-slugs cannot cross the ash (if you have alkiline soils don't do this). The ash will make the soils more alkiline BTW.
