Hello everybody from New Mexico

Tularosa, NM(Zone 7b)

Husband and I moved last fall from Maine to southern New Mexico. We just love it here. Had to get used to a whole new way of gardening, thou. We lived in our Maine house over twenty-five years and had established a beautiful garden and flower beds. But I could never keep roses because of the Japanese Beetels. This property has over fifty rosebushes and I' m in heaven. Everything was quite overgrown,(and still is, we are working on that) because nobody had lived here for some time.
So last year I struggeld and tilled a flower bed (sort of, the soil is certainly a challenge) and then I went hogwild and bought tons of perennials. I was told it was best to plant in the fall, but hardly anything I planted, survived. So I will plant this spring instead and hope for the best.
Regards to all, jungeoma

jungeoma, welcome to Daves Garden. You will find helpful information about growing in your new climate at highcountrygardens.com a company based in Albuquerque NM. Sign up for their newsletter and you will get lots of great tips. This kind of climate is a difficult place to establish plants because often they have too much top for the amount of roots. Water more than you think you need to, and they still might not make it. Last year I grew volunteer winter squash in a new perennial bed to provide shade for plants that were looking stressed. Of course I won't know if they lived for several more months, but I got a great squash harvest!
