bushy brugs vs tree type

Norfolk, VA(Zone 8a)

I see several pictures of other member's plants, and notice that they look more like a "tree" with leaves and blooms in a top "poofie" thing
Is there a reason?
Is one better than the other?
Or is it just what each individual plant tends to do?

Mine are way more bushy, with several woody stems, and branches all over from them.
Is a tree type better for any reason?

thank you
Karen

I grow some both ways. I think a lot of us began growing them like umbrellas or trees because that is how Monika grows them for her brug allee. Some do very well that way, but I have some brugs that just look better in bush form. At least I prefer them that way. I like Golden Lady and Butterfly in bush form as well as L'Amour, Susanne, and MM.

I'll remember that Brugie. I was just recently give two cuttings from Golden Lady, and could probably try that one both ways - to see how it works best around my place.

so neither one makes more blooms?
I know my bush type make a ton of leaves.
Does that take away from blooming ability, or give them more food TO bloom?

You are so helpful, thank you.

I think you get more blooms with bush form, but could be wrong. I'd guess my Butterfly had well over 200 blooms and buds on her this fall. Some of the blooms on the right belong to another plant and Harlot is on the left and is short.

From the two seedlings I started out with this year - the Isabella X was tall and tree like, and the Suave X was more Bush like.

The Isabella provided scattered blooms (practically one at a time - but it is first year seedling) and the Suave X provided many blooms, all at the same time, making a flush.

200 blooms ! ! !
I gasp at the thought. wow.
that is soooo gorgeous
"scratch n sniff" screen
just imagining :-)

I grow them both ways too, and I believe you probably get more blooms with the bush form, but some of them just look nicer as a tree, and some as a bush. I think much of it is personal preference...

Norfolk, VA(Zone 8a)

well, I honestly dont know what kind I have.
I guess I should snap some photos

I just know I love them, very very much.
So if I like bushy and they seem happy, good enough for me.

Waiting to see if I get indoor blooms in a sunny window-
They have more and more new leaf growth and seem happy.

If so, I will share pics of my "babies"

Good, we love pictures. I agree with Gretchen. It is a person preference when it comes to how you grow them, bush or tree. One thing we will all agree on is that no matter how they are grown, they are some awesome eye candy.

did I say babies?
4, 5, and 5 1/2 feet tall?
babies?
I must be looney
oh,,,, yeah,,,, I am :-)

my big guy has 5 woodies and 4 herbies-

5 woody stems from the ground
and 4 green stems from the ground (and they should be woodies too, in due time) and I wouldnt be surprised if more green stems keep coming too

I just LOVE these plants soooooo much!!!

and don't forget "nose candy" too
:-)

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

I like them both ways and each way has its own beauty.

Harrisville, MI(Zone 5b)

Thanks for this thread. I would like to grow some of mine as bushes...

Donna, how does Monster Brug grow best, tree or bush? I am wondering if they wouldn't make a cool "wall" as bushes...???

I can't speak for Donna, Carol. But in the pictures I've seen, DMG look like a humongous bush. Maybe she'll come along and see this once it gets bumped back up :)

Come to think of it - it HAS been a very long time since we've heard from Rooty! Ages! He was moving or something????? After all that work he'd done at his place??????? Am I thinking of someone else?

GOD's Green Earth, United States(Zone 8b)

I didn't know he's moving? I think he did get a new job which must be demanding a bunch of his time. Hopefully we'll hear from him soon :)
