I was at Home Depot tonight and saw this African Violet and just had to have it. I have several other African Violets but I have never seen a speckled one like this. And from what I can tell, both the speckled and the solid flowers come from only one plant. Has anyone ever had one like this and does it have a special name?
Speckled african violet
That a really pretty Av!
I bet you have two differerent Av's planted in that little pot. What a bargin!
Or is possible they could be from the same plant, but most of the time when you look really close at the crown you find two plants very clsoe together.
Keep us posted and let us know what you decide .

I like the speckled one very much.
Doubtful there are two plants in there. But there could be a sucker that is reverting to a blue parent. Fantasies are notorious for reverting. The next time it blooms it could be all be fantasy blooms. (Fantasy is what a speckled bloom is called.) For us the blue fantasies seem to stay true more than the pink ones. Harold
Jesse I was just looking at this pretty Av Fantasy plant of your's and how neat it bloomed two diiferent ways ! I love when my plants to thi exciting :))
Do you still have this beautiful plant ? Have any leaves down ?
Thanks, Allison
Jesse, isnt' that one of the pictures from your post where you say that they are your husband's favourites???
I am so mad! another beautiful AV at yet another Home Depot! I swear the plants in my HD are so beat up and dried out that none of them are worth the price; on top of that every AV they have is pink or purple and the leaves are all dark green- no fantasy, no variegation, just plain jane! Jesse y ou certainly have the luck!
April, it is the same in my HD. i am thinking of moving to NC.
Yes that's it Spidie, if HD can't get us what we want in Georgia and Texas we will move to NC! Actually I think If we are going to move to NC lets just move next to Bluebird so we can make friends!
What a great idea, April.
I have to go now. I am off to the nearest realtors to arrange my move to NC.
ME TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
I'm not sure if I still have this plant because most of what I used to have died. It I find that I have it again, I will share leaves from it.
Jesse
Thanks Jesse ! So pretty. Gosh you've been growing Av's a looong time ! Your really doing great with your babies and bring plants back from near death !
Thanks Allison. It is really funny how all this started. Some time last year I started collecting a few AVs. I had no idea that they had names. I was completly in the dark about them. But I had a few and I really liked them but I was more into the cactus and succulent plants at that time. Then of course all of them died except for a couple. Then at the beginning of this year, I started reading the AV forum. And that is where I discovered that there were more than a dozen types of violets. Then Lorry sent me some plants and leaves and then you sent me some and my collection started growing and growing. Now I see the beauty in each one, unlike before I just thought they came in a few different colors. Isn't it funny how last year they were just another pretty flower and this year I have come to appreciate each and every one. Thanks to guys for teaching me so much. I brag on this forum everywhere I go and tell everyone about it. I guess I need to ask Davd if I can make me some business cards advertising the site and maybe putting a line or two about the AV forum.
Also, last year I did not know that there was such a thing as a varigated AV. I thought all leaves were the same because that is all I have ever seen in most stores. Now I'm totally into the varigated ones. I just love them. And some of them hubby can even tell the difference in. But DH goes for the flowers. And oddly enough, he goes for the single colored ones. I would think he would like the others more since he can see the different colors. But I buy him whatever he likes. He is so limited by what he can see and if a certain one makes him happy, then that makes me happy. Oh, the other type of violet that I would love to have is Annabelle. I think she is the one with the bell type flowers. I think she is a beauty.
You guys on this forum are wonderful and I'm glad that I found you.
Jesse
AHHHH what a sweet storie
Hey, Home Depot in NC is not all that great, either. ONE time and only ONE time did they have AVs that were to die for. Mostly they have the NOID Optimaras and they are purple or pink and maybe have a white edging. One time I went in there to check it out and they had some EverBeautiful and EverRejoice that were huge and in unbelievable condition. One of them measured 13" across! You can believe I snatched up 3 of those, which was all I could afford at $8 each. I could not believe my eyes. I started leaves from them and the EverBeautiful is now starting to bloom. I wanted to talk to someone in charge and thank them for having such good plants for a change but the guy was not available. They were 'way over at the side on a table, not even where anyone would have seen them. I just went down that aisle to get back out of the greenhouse section.
I've decided that HD and Lowe's only carry those cheaper ones because that is what most people want. Many people buy them on a regular basis because they don't know how to grow them (holding up my hand here as one of those people) and they just keep replacing what they just killed at home.
I've found the best time as local stores in my area is around Mother's Day. Everyone wants to sell plants for Mother's Day. Maybe we'll have some good buys in Maryland in May.
I recently talked to the guy in charge of the HD in Durham. He told me that it is not him or any of the employees responsible for all of their problems. At that time they had just moved all of thier plants into half the size it regularly is in and put furniture in its place. He was not happy about it either. He told me that it is not even the store manager that is doing all of this. He said it is the regional manager that is making all of these stupid changes and if we wanted to complain, call the company and complain about him. But now that I have found Bluebird's Greenhouse that sale theirs for only $4, (usually $8 for Russians and Space Babies) I have taken my AV to them, unless I just happen to find some somewhere else. I was in the big Walmart the other night and I got 9 new ones. They were only $1.98 each and they were all named. Due to the problem with my back I have not had chance to photograph them all and post them yet. I hope to do that soon.
Here is a little tip that I did not know until I recently discovered it. When looking at the ones from Walmart and places like that, they are usually in a 4" green pot sitting inside another container. Well, if you take the inside one out there is a sticker on it with its name. I never knew this until recently. So now when I go, I stand there and take all of them out of the outside pot to check for a label. And a lot of the time they will have a name. And I usually make a big mess spilling soil everywhere but I want to know what I am buying.

I read on one of the other forums about AV's that HD is discontinuing 'Tropicals' and they consider AV's in that category. What I 'heard' is that HD will discontinue carrying AV's all together. Bummer, that's where I found my tri-color leaved (could be chimera) foliage AV!
This could be a regional thing too. So don't lash me with a wet noodle if it's not true for your area. Just being the magpie here and repeating what I heard.
No but i will lash you with a wet av stem for letting your Foliage Chimera die :(( I loved that plant . And to be honst it had more going for it than Little Stinker evern. Sorry Little Stinker I love you too :))
Oh how I wish your plant lived though :(
I still have one. I bought another oneback in mid January rememer the thread where I showed the ones in my living room (after you convinced me they would do ok there?) Well they are on their third bloom cycle. All are in the two piece self watering pots and all are getting big and are very healthy. I'm having good luck with them.
Laurie their beautiful What's the one in back ? Looks like Chimera Foliage fore sure !
yea, that's it, it's identical to the first chimera foliage one I had and killed, except the flower is lighter in color. It's bigger now, and losing it's variegation, but the older leaves still have it.,
the one in front is blooming now, all variety of bloom combinations. One solid purple, some with purple blotches, some with purple edges, it's kind of crazy.
all my original leaves have babies. but all are solid. =(
I wonder if a sucker from this plant will give the chimera foliage ?
no suckers yet, and trust me I'm watching it. I think I'm going to go and scratch it's neck to encourage a bit of suckering. I don't want to remove leaves since the outer leaves have the variegation and the newer ones dont. Guess I could take a few middle green leaves and give it a little neck tickle to encourage a few suckers to pluck.
Lot's of times I take one or two leaves from the crown and will get suckers . I do it for trailers as I hate tearing them apart. I took the whole crowns off of two exspensive Chimeras before to get more babies only to kill every bit of them :(( So I don't do this anymore.
