mites are back

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

I was disgusted last night I have been treating mites (looks like fruit flies) and thought I had it licked, BUT I also noticed one of my tallest Brugs leaves were dropping and after inspecting the dirt closely I found more mites, I dug the brug out of the pot and found the roots were almost gone, and the bottom of the stem was black, I decided to cut off all the black, scrap the stem of all black soaked in water for an hour, repoted in new dirt, sure hope it saved the plant, what can I treat the rest of them with to make sure they do not do the same thing.

Should have said GNATS

Doris, I don't think you could find the mites in the soil. You must actually have fungus gnats. If you keep using the stuff with the BT in it, you will get rid of them. Just make sure you don't forget. Also, the yellow sticky cards will catch a lot of them. Now, if you get some webbing in the growth point of your brugs and the under side of the leaves feel sandy, then you probably have a good case of mites. They look like fine particles of dirt on the under sides of the leaves. A magnifying glass will show them for sure. My old eyes have trouble seeing them some of the time.

Brugie your right I should have said gnats, what is BT and where do I get the stuff :) I have been using a spray for gnates, and flying insects that does not harm the plant

Buy some mosquito dunks and then we can ask Kell how she soaks hers (time and how much) or you can order a product called Gnatrol. A search would find it.

thanks again Brugie, I looked for those dunks, but where I am we have no large Garden place so didn't find any, I will do a search.

Doris, do you not have a Lowe's or Home Depot near you? They carry them.

Yes, I got mine at both Lowes and HD. I just break mine into quarters. I drop a quarter of it into a gallon jug. After a little while I break it up with my fingers and leave it overnight.

Someone on here posted a kind already crumbled that could be ordered online. I bet a search would bring it up.

I found the BT and also the disks at Golden Harvest organics. the nearest Lowes or any home gardening place is an hour away, this company said it would send out today. Thanks guys.

Kareoke, please report on how your plants are doing and what you did to them. I think I have mites but I am treating them with a systemic. Not very organic I know, but the Brugs are poison themselves, so what is the difference?

LOL Jnette!

Guess my question to you Kell, is which is worse Brugs with mites, or Brugs with the systemic?

Or, put another way, which is worse the poison Brug, or the poison systemic?

The mites are worse than both of them Jeanette! LOL

well I just got the stuff, and I am doing as Kell said, I two of them up and yesterday I watered the brugs, although I must say in the last two days I had not seen any of them because I have been spraying every morning, and night with Raid house and garden spray that lists gnates, and is safe for all plants, but will use this for awhile just in case they have laid eggs.

Glad we agree on that Kell. Those mites do one lot of damage. I have found that spraying (spritzing) the soil and the mite damaged plants with hydrogen peroxide, soap, and distilled water has really cut down on those fruit flies also.
