The lesson I learned today

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

is Patience!

I have had this seed pod growing on my brug since Aug 10 2004. That's 4 months! It is Peaches and Cream X Rosamond. I had wonderful hopes for this one. The pod is at least 6" long, and it looked like the pedicle was softening and turning yellow. I make the brave decision to cut and harvest!

Here's the pod just picked

I was so disappointed when I saw the seeds. Lots of them, but all immature.

Plant every one of those seeds NOW. You may get a plant or two from them anyway. I never pick my pods until the pod is soft. The peduncle used to be the way I decided if it was time or not, but I think the soft pod is the safest way. Very soft, to the point of falling apart if you smash it some.

I opened a few of them to see the seeds, because I know how fast they deteriorate when they are immature. All the seeds that I opened, the seed itself was mush.

The seeds in the lower right hand corner, have been opened, about 5 min before the pic was taken. Notice they are already starting to deteriorate.

They are soft because they are immature. Not really mush for any other reason. I don't like to peel immature seeds. Actually, I don't peel mature ones very often. Just soak and plant. Did you read my above post?

Yes I did, and again, Thanks, you are someone who really knows brugs! I have a few of them planted, and will wait to see what, if anything happens.

I hope you get something from them. I did the same thing last year with an Inca Sun X Pink Aurea pod. Ended up getting two of them to grow. Hope you get at least a couple. Such a long time to wait to possibly get nothing.

We are all learning good stuff today, (especially this Brug Newbie). Thanks for dropping in Brugie. Sure hope you visit often. :)

Good luck with those seeds, Linda!

Aw, that's a real shame Linda. I hope some of the seeds grow for you. Thanks for sharing your experience. I hope to have seed pods myself some day and this information will be valuable.

I also learned, I should wear gloves when I am using the axe. Fortunately, I didn't need stitches. A good friend of mine, says he's going to take away my axe and get me a hack saw, I said he should be happy I don't own a chainsaw!

Somedays I don't know how I can be so stupid.

Wow...that pod was definitely not soft yet. LOL

Sandy, you're a riot. True the pod wasn't soft, but neither was the presto log. LOL
