Grape hyacinth

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Anybody have success with grape hyacinth (Muscari armeniac)? By success, I mean that they have naturalized and bloomed without prechilling for several years. They guys at my favorite nursery were having a huge argunment about this topic when I asked them about this. The directions state that they open widest in full sun. However, it also states that in order to successfully perennialize them that they should be in partial shade. Sooo, I don't quite know where I should plant them to try them out.

I've not tried them here, htop, but my mother planted some in 1970 as an edging in a bed in full sun. This was at our home place in southern Oklahoma. They're still there. They pop up all over the lawn in April, again in full sun. Of course winter chill is plentiful in zone 7b, so I have no idea about their chances here. Yuska

Thanks for the info, Yuska. I think I read somewhere that they do well in Austin, but it is a tad colder there. I don't see them here very often. I have planted the other type of hyacinth, but they are what they guys at my favorite nursery call "throwaways" because they are good for only one time plantings.

Hazel, no success here and I have tried them several times. They will flower for me that first year only never to be seen again. I have better luck with daffodils (sp?)...lol.

Hi, there! Thanks for the info. The guys at the nursery said they would do great here, but I sure have my doubts.

Thanks for the information. I was going to plant them yesterday, but didn;t have time. It is starting to rain, but I probably will be able to do it sometime today.
