Rooting Cuttings

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

The cuttings that have been so generously given are wonderful, but only half are taking.

Would it help, after soaking them in water until the nodes appear, to dip them in a hormone solution like Root Tone? It's a rooter that has anti-fungal properties in it, a powder. I don't want to lose more cuttings I'm getting soon if this is not a good idea. Would it hurt?

I don't think it would hurt, I usualy put mine in a potting mix right away.

Karrie20x,
First let me say I'm new to all this so I did what looked like I'd cause the least amount of damage because it required the least amount of work. I did get some really good advice to help me along as well (Thanks Gretchen)........ I put the cuttings I got directly into potting soil and put the pot and plant into a ziploc bag. There are several threads that talk about the "bag" method so you may want to look them over.

Out of the 25 cuttings I got only a couple have yet to sprout tiny leaves......

THIS IS MY FIRST TIME HAVING BRUGMANSIAS:

I have been so lucky with mine. I have gotten around 16 cutting and everyone of mine has rooted in water. While rooting they have leaves coming out. I did have a couple that was getting new leaves that wasn't putting on any roots. Then finally today I noticed they are starting. I wait until the roots are about a 1/4 in. long then plant them. They are looking great. I also got some seeds from a DG'er and I have 12 of them that is about 3 in. high. I had one that I did as a log style, just laying it on top of the soil and putting it in a bag, it looks really great, today I need to put a little soil around it because I can see some roots on the side of the log.

I MAY BE IN SERIOUS TROUBLE. WHERE TO PLANT ALL OF THEM IF THEY ALL MAKE IT UNTIL LATE APRIL.

Oh will I bet I figure out something. I LOVE IT, LOVE IT. I may be able to give cuttings away next year.

Edit to correct spelling. I would imagine there are more, wish Dave could add spell check. It would be so handy. HINT HINT.

This brings another question to mind.

When are we supposed to cut them back?

If you have room, don't cut them back. LOL! I think Monika has a thread in here someplace showing her tree cut back. If you are cutting them back to, say, a foot above the ground, go ahead and do it.

2pugdogs,

http://www.iespell.com/

It's a free utility for home users and installs itself right into your IE browser in the tools.

Spokane, WA(Zone 5b)

Shirley, have you installed that without any problems on your computer? I would love a tool like that, but am so afraid of downloading things from the web. I've had it up to "here" with spyware, adware, programs running in the background that use up my computer resources that force me to reboot all the time..........

It is simple to use and totally un-invasive.

2pugs, I have the same problem. About 30 brugs and not enough property or sun. So I am planting some at my communty center ( I am The Clandestine Gardener), some at a mansion in town owned by the county, some at work, and some at a church. We are building a new library so I am planning on planting some there in 2006. It still amazes me how few people know what these things are and are ga-ga when they see one. That makes me smile.......

I am in the same "boat" lots of seedlings growing and not very good soil in my yard so I will set most out in containers, but I love seeing all these growing for next summer.

Irving, TX(Zone 8a)

I spell is the best, my son loaded it on my computer and I love it...
Also if I may ask a question to you all..Hoping Kerrie you don't mind me jumping in but I am concerned with my Brug cuttings I planted a few months ago. These have been growing so good and still putting out new leaves on the top but keep losing the lower leaves so it is looking so tall with just a few leaves on the top. So I am wondering if this is normal or should I do something different? I did go ahead and place in a plastic bag like I had read about so will this help??? And I do have the two cutting in the same pot the one that I received was already rooted and the other was a cutting I placed in water and planted after the nobes formed roots in the water and it was so beautiful after just a month after planted in soil, it seems new leaves were popping up each day..
Confused I am and new to brug cutting as well.....

Thanks y'all

I went to it and put downloaded it. I have an icon for it but don't see on my toolbar. What have I done wrong?

Click 'TOOLS' on your browser bar. It should be there in the drop-down menu ('-'?)
