To install or not to install XP SP2

I went to Windows Update tonight trying to check the optional updates. Instead of taking me to optional updates it said that they strongly recommended installing SP2.
I've heard some pros and cons on this and I'm afraid to download it before finding out if it will create problems. It takes over 5 hrs to download it and I'm on dialup so who knows how long it will take.
Has anyone had problems with this after installing it? Is it something that I really need?
