Aric and I have been to serveral workshops that Jeanine has led at the mountain research center. These were established to give farmers an alternative to growing tabacco. We thought we might go into it but if we do,it will have to wait. Are you a master gardener?
Nah, I started volunteering with them and also took the first half of a course called "Certified Plantsman" but when all the fun personal stuff started happening I stopped. They weren't offereing the MG class until 2006.
I do have a master gardener's manual though. It has a lot of good info in it but in the section that lists good plants/trees, etc for NC it has a bunch of invasives.. That kind of disturbed me. Although I'm sure learning ALL the aspects of plants would help make me into a better gardener I decided it was more fun to 'self study' the things I really like! So I can skip over the parts in the manual I'm not interested in.. I don't really need to know how to identify different Ilex by their leaf shapes you know? LOL!!

Nicole, thanks for that link. Awesome!
Outstanding! The link called "Alternative Nature Online Herbal" is great for what it's title states, but beyond that, this is a wonderful reference for identifying and understanding many wild plants in the east - excellent pics and text. Thank you, Nicole.
