Propagating hoyas from seeds

Brownsville, KY(Zone 6a)

I am getting some hoya seeds in a trade. I need some information before they arrive. What is the best medium for propagation? What conditions do they need before and after germination?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Shirley

First of all, the seeds need to be fresh to germinate. Don't wait once you get them....2-3 weeks old and they could be too old.

I have done them 2 ways:

1. Spread them on a damp paper towel and put them in a ziplock bag...takes about 3-4 days to germinate. When they are about 1" tall, pick the strongest and the biggest out and carefully put them in a light soil mixture (50-50 peat and perlite or something like that).

2. Put them directly onto the peat/perlite mix...in a ziplock or in one of those cookie containers from Safeway with a lid or.... Anyway, something that will keep the humidity in.

It is dreaming to think to keep all seedlings: what most people do is keep the strongest 20 seedlings, and then grow them out to a couple of inches tall and keep the strongest 10.

What fun...what are they seeds of? You should have a ball!

Carol,

Thank you for the information. It doesn't sound too complicated. :0)

I don't know what hoyas the seeds are coming from. It will be a mystery and surprise.

Shirley
