Tree Philodendron, Selloum (??)

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

I believe the below is Tree Philodendron, Selloum (Philodendron bipinnatifidum). I'm sure someone more knowledgable than me will let us know if this is correct or not.

Just thought you would like to see the pictures before I put it up for the winter. It is terribly root bound but it will just have to stay that way until Spring. I don't have the energy to repot it NOW!! There are two pots of them, 3 years old each and in their second pot.

Your plants are nice!

Judy, your plants are beautiful! I have two versions of this plant. One has the really large leaves (12"-24" wide), sends out air roots, and when it was a young plant, the leaves were unformed - that is more rounded and not "fingered". The other version I have, has smaller leaves (9"-12" wide), no air roots, and the young plant sends out formed leaves. I THINK, but am not entirely sure, that the larger leafed one is a Monstera, and the smaller is the philodendron.

Your plant looks great! And Happy Birthday!

Can anyone confirm the name of this plant or if I'm incorrect tell me the name???

Hey Judy, just for the heck of it, take the picture over to the ID forum and see if someone responds over there. I sure have no idea but I can say it is really pretty. I love plants with big leaves.

I'd like to know more, too. Since September, I have acquired two of these at companies where I water the plants. How much light do they need to be successful? I have b een clipping fading leaves off of one, which I believe was due to the damage sustained in moving it in to its current location(the movers bent and broke stems.)But I need to know if it is properly located. The plant is huge and moving it would be a major project, but if it needs a better spot, then I can make sure that happens. The other is smaller and by a window so that does not worry me at all. I think they are fascinating.

gardenmart, I treat mine as rain forest plants, away from windows but in a fairly bright room. Its normal for this plant to lose its lower leaves -this gives it is trunk, and sometime name of tree philodendron - I'm fairly sure your ID for this plant is here - http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/37036/index.html - which is essentially what judy said in the beginning.

It looks exactly like the Selloums in my backyard. I've never heard them called Tree Philodendrons. Here we refer to them as Split Leaf philodendrons.

Mine do well in dappled shade. They don't need a lot of light at all. The more light they get, the more water they need.

Any other questions? These are a staple in my landscaping.

Dogzilla, there's split leaf philodendron and there's this one, a cut leaf philodendron - at least that's what we're tryig to determine here....

Also, is philodendron either related to or confused with monstera? Or is monstera just another name for big philodendrons? Does anybody know?

ceedub, are you talking about Monstera deliciosa and Philodendron 'Ginny' (I've seen 'Ginny' spelled various ways, but for the same plant). There are also several (probably many more than 'several') other philos that have split leaves in both size ranges you mentioned. Without more of a discription or pics it's near impossible to tell.

Thanks Carter. I better get taking pictures so I can ID them.

Thanks for putting this up top where all of us can see.
