There is only one native Dactylorhiza orchid in North America, growing in Alaska, but we have two introduced ones in Newfoundland. This pictured one was found about 10 years ago growing within the St. John's city limits, yet we were not even aware it was here! We have no idea how long it has been here or how this Irish native got here. We are not even sure of the species. There are about 500 plants persent on one seepage-slope, so they must have been here awhile. Lovely flowers and a welcome addition to our flora despite the fact its really just a weed!
