There is only one native Dactylorhiza orchid in North America, growing in Alaska, but we have two introduced ones in Newfoundland. This pictured one was found about 10 years ago growing within the St. John's city limits, yet we were not even aware it was here! We have no idea how long it has been here or how this Irish native got here. We are not even sure of the species. There are about 500 plants persent on one seepage-slope, so they must have been here awhile. Lovely flowers and a welcome addition to our flora despite the fact its really just a weed!
European Marsh orchid in Newfoundland
What a beautiful weed though!
My grandparents came from Great Burin.
If you ever want to clear that area of weeds Todd... I'll be glad to take them! What a gorgeous plant!
Maybe St. Brendan brought it!
~'spin!~
It's very similar to the Northern Marsh Orchid that grows in Coatham Marsh, about 10 miles from my home. They're very particular about soil type I believe. It's pretty!
