Best mediterranean / tropical garden plants for San Antonio?

San Antonio, TX(Zone 8b)

Hello everyone. I am clearing out much of my current landscaping and re-doing the whole thing. My house has a mediterranean design with three arches in front with a nice little patio. I am planing on puting three queen palms in front echoing the arches. I have several Cycads (King, Prince and Mexico Sago's plus some cardboard palms) and would like to add a couple of tree ferns. What other tropical / mediterranean plants would you add that would do well here in San Antonio? Any suggestions or comments? Anything would help. San Antonio is on the line for 8-b ans 9-a. I get mostly 9-a weather but I guess 8-b cold is possible. Thanks, George in San Antonio.

George, certainly Canary Island Palms(Phoenix canariensis) are a good choice also Date Palms (Phoenix dactylifera) for palms.

Also weeping bottle brush( Callistemon viminalis ) but can be damaged if temps fall below 20* for too long without protection. Red Cluster Bottlebrush (Callistemon 'Red Cluster')

Japanese Yew (Podocarpus macrophyllus) can provide evergreen color year round. Makes a great speciman plant.

Variegated Acorus (Acorus gramineus 'Variegatus') is a good choice for an ornamental grass. It doesn't tend to spread.

Although not hardy here, I have an Australian Tree Fern that I keep outside in a pot in my landscape. It does require a little more care than I like to give it but I go the extra mile.

Hope some of these ideas help!
