One of my favourite ferns; beautiful vase-shaped form

Todd, Beautiful fern. It would happen to be semi-evergreen would it? I have the perfect place for two of them. That is if they take full shade.

It is indeed semi-evergreen, probably nearly full evergreen in your area. Mine does get some sun for about 2-3 hours in early morning but shade the rest of the day.

Thanks so much!

If it gets sun 2 to 3 hours a day in zone 5, it will be very happy in zone 9 with total bright shade - that is if it will tolerate zone 9 heat. Next step in the adventure is to find out that, and where to buy it. There's a fern place in Oregon, maybe they'll have it. We're just a little over the top for many plants here. For some it doesn't get cold enough, and for some they just melt in the heat. But of course there is a lot we can grow.

I got mine from a nursery in British Columbia...that species does very well in the Pacific Northwest. I expect Oregon nurseries should sell it.

WOW. Beautiful, Todd. Really unique.

One more thing Todd, every website I look at says that this fern gets from 12-24 inches tall. How tall is yours?

St. John's, NL(Zone 5b)

Closer to 24"

Great picture, I will have to watch for this fern when I am out shopping.

Thanks, Todd. I appreciate it. It is a beautiful fern. Now I'll have to figure out somewhere else to use it.

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

I agree quite beautiful!
That vase shape almost looks like a young tropical tree fern
Does it hold shape all year or open up more as the season progresses?

It holds the shape all season. It really is one of the best ferns I have...very tropical looking.
