Beautiful! How did you mix soils to achieve this? I'd love to give it a try. I grow a lot of hydrangea to dry.

Thanks, but it did it on its own. I just know that ph levels affect the color, therefore it had to be mixed.

Your Nikko Blue is beautiful. I have had one for a couple of years now here in Vallejo, California. I keep forgetting the correct time to prune it. I hope since yours is so beautiful, you might know, and give me some advice.

Beautiful, healthy looking Hydrangea, Kathy. Tell us all your secret. :)

The only thing I found about hydrangeas in my yard is, 1. Plant them up against the house, north side
2. I know its a pain in the butt, but use lanscaping fabric around them and mulch on top. (otherwise I worked myself to death watering them and they were in constant stress. The bed was made out of pure compost. I think the differing colors on ONE bush is adjustments in the ph levels of the soil. (I didn't do this on purpose, it just happened) I've killed a few hydrangeas just by putting them in the wrong places, when one lived and thrived on the north side, up against the house, I ran, (not walked) to the nearest nursery for more.

Teriblondness... "Bigleaf hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla), including hortensias and lacecaps, flower on old wood, so wait to prune until after they bloom. Note, too, that buds may be killed in a severe winter and the plant may not bloom the following summer." Hope that helps.

My Mom would take egg shells and coffee grounds and sprinkle them on different areas of the roots to change the PH of the soil. Her bushes are 45+years old and have always put on a beautiful display.
