Kell, lookit...

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

i hope these brug will meet ur expectations of miniature or patio type brugs. the whole plant is only 2-1/2' tall

u gave me the seeds of CG x Butterfly or CDW, this seedling has been growing for 2 yrs. it is only now that it has bloomed. it is also very terrific bloomer. i do not know if it fathered by Butterfly or CDW, that was what was written on the envelope.

Tassy ... that is the natural growth of all the above brugs i grew seedlings for Kell. i did not do anything except patiently grow them :). lately i've read in other threads she has miniature brugs growing for her. just thought to share the seedlings that are blooming. there are others too but have not bud nor bloom yet.

it is almost 3 p.m. Pacific Time, the snow has not let up. still falling down heavy like cotton balls!

MaVieRose, You mean it's snowing there in Hesperia??? Wow!!

MaVieRose,

Love all your Brugs! Your CG x Butterfly or CDW seedling is so sweet and petite! Very good for people that have limited growing space! It would also make a lovely centerpiece!

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

Jan, it started snowing 11 p.m. last night. it snowed all day today. we now have a foot of snow on the ground. it is still snowing as we speak. in the 7 yrs i had lived here, this is the 1st time for me to see snow in the Fall. normally snow comes in late Spring... very light and do not last so long. it melts in matter of hrs. Jan u can see photos of the snow in the other thread i opened this morning name "who says it do not snow in So. Calif."

Shirley, it is super petite. the other blooms were smaller than the one i took photo of. it has a very lovely fragrance to it too. i was wondering if the brugs i grow is in sympathy with me due to the fact i am very petite LOL!

Sweet & Petite just like you MV.

Hope you are handling the weather OK.

I just love your little brug flowers. I just may need to get some from you next year *smiles*

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Great pics, MaVie.

Angleton, TX(Zone 9a)

It is a very small flower. It is amazing with the extreme heat and then the snow that your get these brugs to grow. You must work very hard at it. Congrats. MaVie

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

Shirley, i am coping with the cold weather. to state i am over bundled with layers of clothes is an under statement LOL. hey! my physical health comes first, right!

Thanks Ada. i still have lots of blooms, the only problem is... all the brugs i potted are into shock at the moment. they look unsightly but lots of blooms.

Hi Franny, i, too am surprised with all these miniature flowers i have blooming around here. it is not all hardwork, i would rather attribute all the lovely blossoms to the Alfalfa pellets i used during Spring and Summer. a good base start on fertilizing and foliar spraying are the bases of what the end result of all the work i had invested on the brugs i grow. they are not hard work, but routine work i do with all plants i grow. so far, the foliar spraying of H2O2/alcohol combination, prevented any bug's existense todate. i do not have the bug problems Y'All are having this time of the year, let alone also during their growing season.

i do not have a green house, all the brugs are in the front porch with only a roof over them. it is 34ºF outside.

San Antonio, TX(Zone 9a)

Wow, Mavie your flowers and the snow are amazing. We are washing away with the rain. Lots of roads are closed and creeks, etc. running over. A lot of San Antonio was without electricity this morning. Our electricity is on, but cable isn't working and DH is going nuts. lol

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

Sylvia, it is still snowing heavily as we speak. Cajon Pass from what i heard is also close. lots of main road or freeway around this area are also close. surrounding towns like Apple Valley, Victorville, and Big Bear are also snowed in. from last night's news some parts of Riverside and San Bernardino counties are also laden with snow. i know how ur DH feels, cuz the reception of the tv last night went capot. i had to spray water on the disk antinna to melt the snow accumulation and get the tv going again. so far, we are lucky we still have electricity running.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Oh wow, I thought it would be over by now. Hope you have plenty in the pantry. How deep is it now?

Woodville, TX(Zone 8a)

MaVie, very pretty pictures. We don't have snow here, just plenty of rain. Now I'm ready for it to quit! For once I'd like snow like you have. We just get ice when it gets cold. Can't believe your brugs are still blooming out on the porch! Stay warm and cozy. Jenny

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

Linda, the snow finally stopped late last night. we nearly had 2' snow on the ground. brugs looked like they are doing fine. a few broken limbs here and there but other wise fine.

Thumbnail by MaVieRose
High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

Jenny, snow sure looked niced, but after it has graced the grounds, i do not think if is nice after all... not with the cleanup and work that need to be done. here is the 15' tree that was uprooted due to the heavy snow on its branches and leaves. there are lots of huge tree limbs that broke too on both sides of the fences.

gee MaVie, how can your Brugs survive that much snow, and cold

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

i do not know Doris, but they are very much alive. we will see 2 weeks from now, how they will be doing. i will keep them where they are, and see how they will fare, and will keep u posted. i was just out there, taking limbs that broke.

i and the brugs had never experienced fresh snow this heavy in the 7 yrs of living here. this is the 1st for me and the brugs. what is funny is... we are not suppose to get our 1st frost till Dec. 8. we never experience the lower 20's until late Spring of the following year. i guess more lessons for me to learn in the most immediate future.

i know for a fact, that if i leave brugs on the ground, some will come back others will succumb. the only way i can be assured is to get cuttings or pot the mother plants and keep them exposed to the elements. i am so glad i got some brugs to experiment.

Daybreak is so sturdy, not one limb broke, even though the top growths were buried in the snow.

Wow, it looks strange to see a Brug blooming in the snow. MaVie.

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

Ada, it is not my doing, but Mother Nature. aren't u glad i am brave enough to do experiment on my plants? in a week or so, we will know the result. one thing for sure though, when the heavy frost comes, they will surely die to the ground, hopefully to come back to life from the root zone next year.

am just waiting for the ice to melt, it is too wet and too icy to go out. besides too cold for my rheumatism to deal with :). my shoe and feet sinks inside the deep icy snow

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Great pictures Ma Vie. I sure hope your brugs are OK. My favorite picture is the one of the brug flowerign in the snow! That is amazing!

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

thanks for the concern Kell, so far all my brugs are ok. the newly potted ones are in shock, but i hope they will be fine. the ones in the thawing snow looks fine.

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

MaVie, that's some shot. Wonder if anyone else has taken a photo of blooms surrounded by snow. I just came in from raking leaves. The sun is shining today after rain up 'til Thursday morning.

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

weather is realy strange everywhere, we had Tornadoe touch down Wed. afternoon, happy to say I am OK

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

believe it or not Linda, we still have snow on the ground after a few days of sun. so far the brugs are still standing tall and looked normal.

Doris... u can say that again! snow has not fully melt, yet we have another storm warning for tonight.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

Amazing, MaVie!! I cannot wait to see who returns. Good luck!!

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

so far, the brugs looks normal, only tips got frost bites Sherry. i do not take much chances, so i dug some off the ground. others i will leave in the ground to see if they come back to life next Spring. as u know i love experiments... hehehehe.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

MaVie, have you ever experimented with two sacks of cedar or cypress mulch, per brug??? Not for all, just the 'special' ones. If you haven't I'd love for you to do it next year to see what happens. Again, my money is on you!!!!

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

i can not use any wood mulch in my area due to heavy infestation of ants and termites. the wood will only attract the ants more. am so glad, the ants has not bothered my brugs. i used plenty of pine needles though.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

MaVie, in my zone 8a, pine straw attracts mold/mildew, fleas, ticks, ants and redbugs.
Also, wood mulch, cedar/cypress wood mulch, deters all the above, if maintained at three inches. It is so interesting, to me anyhouse, to see how weather and plant dos and don't play out, in different zones. Have you ever tried wood mulch??? We have had Nov snow in Arky only once, heavy like you've had, only a few times and on the two occasions that I remember vividly, that was the only cold weather we had all season. I look forward to seeing how your weather goes later in the season...

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

Sherry, the heavy snow we had last week, lasted a week before it completely thawed. here we are again with another storm warning ahead of us. this morning at 8 a.m., we had 28ºF. it was cold all day, high of upper 50ish. this coming week it is predicted to be in the lower 20's.

i do not know about cedar/cypress wood mulch, i have not seen it around here. only ones i see around here are regular wood chunks for mulch around roses, i do not even know what they are made of.

when i used to live in Los Angeles, i have always use redwood compost around my garden. each winter time i had problems of ant getting even indoors. the very reason why i never use any wood material type mulch. in fact, i do not see any type of mulch being sold, except the ones in the bag called compost. i can not see myself paying $5.00 for mulch. i use the pine needles on the trees around the property.

i will keep u posted Sherry. next time i go to HD or local nursery, i will check if they have cedar/cypress mulch and let u know.

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

MaVie, I found out about mulch before i found out about brugs because I grow Upees, Up Right Elephant Ears, which I adore. We get mulch in 2 cubic yard & 3 cubic yard sacks, at no more than $3.00, and I don't remember it ever being that high. Cedar/cypress mulch deters bugs, even in the Delta. I probably have 30 brugs in the ground. Out of those, I have about 5 really special brugs that I don't want to lose, so $30, per season, for me is a good investment to save those in the ground. Brugs and Upees live/die at the same temps and I've been growing Upees for about 8 years and I've never lost a one, and until last year, I never used but one stack of mulch, per plant, per winter. This year is a test and, pray for my brugs, I hope they will make it. We have not had a frost yet, so there is absolutely no telling how bad our real winter will be because it's generally way worse when it starts in December. I love seeing the difference in the same zones in different parts of the country and I hope your early winter might make your next spring oh so glorious!!!

High Desert, CA(Zone 8a)

well we are not supposed to officially have frost till Dec. 8, but early snow surely came as a big surprise, there were no predictions, it just came!

this is the 1st time in nearly 7-8 yrs of stay here in Zone 8. the first and coldest weather we have had. the kind of temperature we have now, don't normally come here till Feb thru April of Spring time in the Upper Desert. weather and temperature sure is abruptly changing! each year is weird and different weather so i observe. i follow my instincts, and i do not feel very comportable taking chances with few brugs i treasure.

zones and zoning in different parts of the country, from my personal point of view is but a mere quideline on plants we can and will grow w/in our area. i doubt if it has to do with weather and climatic conditions. there are one too many factors to take into consideration too. i.e. even if u live in zone 8a and live in lower lands, u temp will not be as cold as when u live in upper lands like i do. that is jmo.
