Thought I'd share a pic of part of my new Episcia collection with you all.
I really have enjoyed them and hope they will grow & make a few stolons to trade in the spring.
Tell me which is your favorite in the group...
Enjoy,

Episcia Collection Pic
nice selection! you've got a good range of foliage there. I find it amazing that most hybrids are bred from only a couple of species.
Nice collection Msc. Thanks for the pictures.

I was just reading an article stating the same thing.
I find it amazing you can get such a varied leaf color & texture from such few plants. You wouldn't think that they had such varied gene pools.
But then it does explain how some are almost impossible to tell apart.
I don't see a lot of differences for instance, between Alice's Aussie & Strawberry Patch... but they are new to me, so what do I know..lol
Silver Emblem and Toy Silver look the same.
I think my favorites are Pink Acajou and Santa Marta.
It's hard to appreciate them if not from up close but your pics really capture the individual's spark.
Out of your collection, I'd have to say my fav is the one on the lower left corner. I love the creamyness.
Yes, I agree CaptMicha, you do have to see an Episcia to really appreciate their beauty.
The one you admire is a mini -leaved variety called Silver Emblem, blooms a red flower. It is very shiney leaf form.
I love the top left and bottom right ones!! The one on the top right looks like one I received marked as Chocolate Soldier. Is that a variety name or generic? I know little about these plants but the one I have is easy to root, easy to care for and has become one of my most treasured house plants!
Badseed,
The top left is E.Blue Water/has light blue flowers and the bottom right is Strawberry Patch/Red Flowers.
The bottom middle is (I think) Chocolate Soldier... or it could be Silver Sheen ,they are ery similar in leaf color.lol
Chocolate Soldier is a common name for a couple of differrent plants, but if it looks similar then that's probable it's name...
If you have a pic we'd love to see it.
I love mine as house plants and so far I have had good luck with them, too.
Went to look and mine might be your bottom one. LOL I'll have a pic in a second.
I noticed the other day that Lowe's had a couple (unlike the ones you have) for $3 or $4. They were in the section where they have the small tropicals and orchids. Yours are very very nice. My fave is the purple one, bottom row, right corner.
Hiya vossner,
It would be so nice if Lowe's or Home depot would carry them here.
The only ones I have ever found locally were at small specialty shops down town in Houston, they had a few in hanging baskets.
These Episcias I had to order online and they weren't $3-4 . So much for my plant budget. lol
Maybe they are finding out how popular they are right now and adding them to their selections??? That would be nice!
Your favorite is Strawberry Patch and it is even prettier in person. There's one called Alice's Aussie that is very similar too.
I can't wait to see it bloom...
MsC
Badseed,
I'd say that's pretty close match for Chocolate Soldier....does it bloom for you?
It's been a while since I've been able to look at anything on DG except my watched threads, so I am just finding this thread. My favorites are the top left and bottom middle. I love the bright green of the top left one.
And now I have to show my ignorance and ask what the difference is between AVs and Episcias? Or are they one in the same?
Thanks,
Mendy
Hiya Mendy,
We are glad you found us.
The top left is E.Blue Water/has light blue flowers (eventually)and the bottom middle is probable E.Silver Sheen, it has red/orange flowers if I remember right.lol.
This forum is for Gesneriads and African Violets and Episcias are both in that family. They are different plants but they take the similar growing conditions. They are some of the most popular houseplants that can be grown indoors under artificial light and they bloom!
The forum is relatively new and we are always glad to add one more person so please read the old post and look at the pictures.
Glad you stopped by,
MsC
Thanks for the info MsC. I've been here a couple times before...I've posted some of my pics on the "AV pics to share" thread. I only have a few AVs and don't know much about them, but somehow I've managed to keep mine alive and blooming for 5 or 6 years!! LOL! I'll be around here and there....I love to learn more and more about them. :-)
Mendy
