Just got several sets of bulbs: allium, lilies, iris, hard glads, etc. I'm in zone 7a (or 6 -- depends on map -- I live in CT right on the coast of Long Island Sound, it rarely gets below 10 degrees here). First, is it too late to plant these bulbs? Second, if it is too late, how do I store these for planting in the spring ... and when in the spring can I plant them? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
newbie needs help too late to plant? How do I store them?
Welcome to DG Wordsilk!!! Get them in the ground!! Lilies in particular can be planted as long as the ground is not frozen. I think that's true for all of them on your list except the Iris. Are these tall bearded iris or bulb iris like Iris reticulata? If bulb type then they are ok to plant too.
I wouldn't wait too much longer though.
Can I add a little more? My problem is not that it may be too late, it's that I bought too many. Oops. Don't really have good places for some of these.
Question: Can I fill a pot with planting soil and plant the bulbs in there? Can I leave the pot out over the winter? Should I mulch it? Just an idea.
HH - what type of bulbs are you thinking of potting up?
Here's a link to a discussion we had about potting lily bulbs....

I'm still planting. We have only had a couple of light frosts, not even enough to totally kill back the canna, brugs and ears. So long as the ground is workable and the temps aren't gonna drop and stay any time soon, you should be fine.
Yeah....I should have added that myself I just ordered some more daffs on an auction last Thursday. Hoping they arrive before Thanksgiving so I can get them in the ground.....not too late to plant, but sure is cold out there planting......44* here today. ;-(
huga--I'm still planting...I'm putting some daffs and allium in with my hostas..have tried some together in containers too so we'll see...

I know you're probably mostly sunny but did you see this thread about interplanting bulbs with hostas--may be of interest to you since you're making a plan for spring....
