I've been out on my deck/GH, and checking out the yard. Today was a lovely sinny and mild day after all the wind and rain we've had.
I still have some flowers, mostly brugs blooming, but they are near the end of it I think. The brugs are up on the covered, lit, and a bit heated so it doesn't freeze, deck. Some of the colours may a bit too green. I had just turned on the big light and I think it's changed what the clolours really are, especially the Whiskers. It's orangy yellow, not green like in the picture! :(
We still have to get all the leaves up and mow the lawn one last time.

What's blooming today
Linda, you are such a show off. But they look so nice. Thanks for those lovely photos. Some of my grape hyacinths put up foliage in the fall too. As long as they don't bloom, everything is normal
What I didn't show you was the clouds of bugs, and the >5 bug strips that are covered with bugs! I don't think they are fungus gnats, they're bigger than that. Or the spider mites. Once they all quite blooming, I'll be chopping them back and spraying more intensly to get rid of the mites. I also didn't show you the 5 gal. buckets strewn around the deck to catch the leaks from the roof when it rains ( and it does, lots!)
You're killing us Linda.....even with your buggies!! (Believe me we have them inside as well...only our poor plants don't look as happy). :(
Bllooms look great Linda. Putting all the rest of us to shame, though. Wanted to ask you a question. How long do Brug seeds last? Like how long can you keep them without planting them?
I don't know Donna, maybe either Jeanne or Liz can answer that. I just found a packet of seeds that Liz sent me this spring, and I hope to get them going in a few days.
Liz....Jeanne? What do you Brug experts say?
Oh good, so if I just got some Brug seeds now, they'd still be good for trading at our round-up, right? Thanks Jeanne. I received some seeds from Honibee and have them (hopefully) germinating now and I am expecting more from kell any day. I just don't know if I can plant anything else. I am running out of room!
running out of room... you and me both!
I said to my SO yesterday that I needed another seed tray, warming mat and a seedling lamp. You should've seen the look I got.
Maybe later in the week, I'll try again... and then get them anyway!
Donna, make sure that you soak the seeds for 48 hours. You can peel them or not but don't plant them below the soil, they need light to germinate. Cover with saran wrap, keep about 68F-72F from below. Don't worry if the saran beads up, you are creating a mini rain forest. OH, it's a good idea to boil your soil first. It removes the problems of fungus gnats.
Good Luck!
Uh oh! I got some seeds from honibee about 10 days ago. The note she left was to soak for 48 hours before planting, then keep moist with bottom heat. So I soaked for 48 hours, then planted in potting soil, placed on a heating pad, watered, covered the pot with Saran wrap. Did I screw up? I shouldn't have planted? Sniff, sniff....

Just dig them up and press them lightly on top of the soil. It won't hurt them. Just give them light. A window will do as well as shop lights as long as you can keep up the bottom heat.
Ok, thanks Liz. They are already in a south window, but, I'll do that right away, Hopefully they haven't rotted in there. I'll get this Brug thing, if it kills me!
They're really pretty easy once you stop fretting over every leaf and spot. I know, I've been there. LOL
So I shouldn't fret if my teenage brug, looses a leaf, right? (she whimpers pathetically), just checking? :(
The brug seeds need light to germinate???
Weellllll shoot! I guess that explains why most of my seeds aren't doing so well. I have the bottom heat, and have them covered with plastic, but nothing happens, except mould. It's a good thing I didn't plant all my seeds at once, I still have a bunch that I can grow right. Oh well, it's all learning. thank god for the experts around here.
Mould is not good. Dig up your seeds and if they still look viable give them a quick rinse in 2-1 water/ alcohol. Then put a fresh bunch of soil in an old tea towel. Put the tea towel with the soil in a collander. Pour boiling water from the kettle through it. Press excess water out. No mould, no gnats.
Also don't waste space by putting each seed in an individual pot. You know those coloured styrofoam containers you get mushrooms in? They are perfect. Put about 2 inches of boiled soil (cooled) in the container, lightly tamp down, then lightly press the seeds on top of the soil. Saran, then that's it. You can get about 20 seeds in each flat. But put different crosses in different flats. With the really shallow soil it's easy to scoop up the seedlings with something small like a fish fork.
Oh dear...I didn't realize you weren't supposed to cover the seeds as well. I was going by the information on the BGI site. They said to cover them with about 1/4 to 1/2 inch of soil. I don't have a warming mat and I didn't cover them with plastic either. I was wondering if they were a bit too cool. Out of 6 in one pot I have 3 coming up and one out of 5 in my other pot. I planted them on Nov. 7th.
I just went poking (carefully) around and I uncovered the other four in the pot with 5. They are growing. Should I try to remove some of the soil? I'd hate to lose them as Brug seeds don't seem to be very easy to come by. Unless you grow your own seed pods I guess. Maybe yours are alright too Donna.
Sandy
Do you have a baseboard heater under a window ledge? That will work. I have never used a heat mat under my brug seeds. The way you are doing it you might get some seeds up but not a high percentage. What you can try is after you have the second set of leaves on the ones that are up, dig up the remaining seeds and do as above. But you definitely want to cover them.
Okay, thanks Liz, I'll do that. The pots are in my bay window which has a heater along the wall below it. I guess they're warm enough because it looks like I have 100% germination in the one pot. Out of all my new brugmansia experiences I'm finding the seeds to be particularly exciting. As I was telling Jeanne, I think I'm wearing a path in the carpet going over to look at them. I guess it's the fact that you're growing them right from scratch...they're your little babies, if you know what I mean.
Thanks again Liz. The deed is done! I was down early this morning digging in my planter looking for Brug seeds. Found most of them, and they seem "none the worse for wear". A couple had little roots coming from them. I lovingly placed them on top of the moist soil and gently pressed them in. Then sprayed and covered again with Saran Wrap and returned to south Window sill on heating pad. Now...the waiting game! Thanks again for the tips. don't know what us newbies would do without you experts. :(
I love growing brugs from seed, it's so satisfying. They are the only things I do grow from seed. With the other seeds I have the attention span of a gnat. LOL
I'm a bit worried that my seedlings are getting too long and leggy. Is that something that happens with them when you start them at this time of year? Should I put them under grow lights?
Linda you have mail..
Anna
Thanks for the help Jeanne. After much struggle I managed to get one of the sets of lights back onto one of the Floralight stands. We took all the lights off to accommodate the orchids when we put them in the solarium. It's amazing how if you take something apart and then try to put it back together, suddenly it's as if they never did fit together. I only have two pots so I only need one shelf. I always used one cool light and one growlight per unit for the orchids. Is that all right for the brug seedlings? Also, how many hours per day should I leave the lights on?
Sandy
That's perfect for the seedlings. Some say 12 hours but mine work fine with 8 hours.
Linda, I just saw this thread - beautiful photos. At this rate I'm in serious danger of turning into a brug person! No-o-o-o-o.......... :-D
Looking forward to seeing them (& you of course!) in person next spring.
