I have some rooted pineapple crowns growing in gallon pots. Most all of the tips of the leaves are brown and dry and one has a hole in the middle because while it was rooting, the middle rotted out.
All have put out a healthy green ?pup? now that they're overwintering inside. Do I cut off the old crown or just leave it? PS, when these will go out in the spring, can I put them in full sun or do they need a little shade? And will they do well if planted in the ground or should I keep these potted?
Pineapple Q
Your pine pup is probably too dry...mist it. When you fertilize, use nothing higher than triple 14 for now...and something with a high middle number when the flower starts. put the fertilizer into the lower bracts, now the ground.
The pups can be planted as they are. No need to cut off anything from the original plant. It may produce again. The pups you pull/cut off should harden for about a week.
When you put them out in the spring, FULL HOT SUN...and you can put them in a pile of rocks or cinders...they are bromiliads and do not need soil...just support.
At least, that's how we do it.

Why do you think the pups are dry? I haven't seen any probs with the new growths.
Thanks for the info. I can't wait for spring and maybe fruit!
Dunno about the dry pup...but when you cut them off, not twist them off, we are told to let them "heal"...I guess so they won't rot.
The bottoms do need to touch something, because there are little roots that hold them there. We stuff brommies in the crotches of trees and they grow just fine....

I doubt any of my trees growing in full sun will be large enough to do that yet but that would be REALLY cool! Do you have to mist yours daily when you do that?
