When sowing my Epi seed, do I place them on top of the soil or cover them with a little sand, or....??? Would it be best to wait until spring or sow them now? I removed them from the fruit and they are dry.....now what? :~D
Epipyhllum from seed....best method?
I seeded out Epiphyllum phyllanthus by simply taking the whole seed pod, WITHOUT DRYING or cleaning up the seeds first, and sprinkling the seeds on top of cactus soil. I placed the tray at bright filtered light and I kept the soil moist ( always with rain water). That was in the Spring and I am now the happy owner of many Epi babies. I think they ALL germinated.
Since this plants grow in tropical regions, I simply tried to imitate natural conditions. A pod would split, drop onto the floor and germinate.
I would just give it a shot now.
Thanks so much! Karen
Where can I find epip seeds?
Do any of you have any seeds to trade?
I have some coming. They are still in the ripening stage. I'll be happy to trade with you when they're ready.
K
Thanks.
What do Epi seeds look alike? Do they are easy to grow for beginner? I never have grow the Epis before. I would like to try some day.
Connie
They are tiny and black. I grew some of my Epis from a seed pack I bought from Thompson & Morgan. They grew easily. I have not tried it yet from seeds from my own plants.
K
How long do they take to germinate?
Connie
Mine took about a week to germinate.
Yup, me too.
K
What kind of soil mix do you use for seeds?
Connie
I used African Violet mix, it stayed moist and was nice and soft.
K
Do you use the cactus and succulent soil mix or remain with African Violet soil mix when the epi seedlings become mature?
Sorry I ask too many questions. :-)
Connie
When I transplant them I make a mix of 1/3 African Violet mix, 1/3 Cactus mix, and 1/3 Vermiculite & Perlite (equal parts of each). They seem happy with that and it's easy, a big bonus.
K
(Edited.....I'm sure there are better recipes for Epi mix, hopefully others will chime in)

That will be nice if we buy a ready made Epi soil mix from store.
Many thanks for answer my questions. :-)
Connie
Happy to help! That's how I learned.....by asking lots of questions! :~D
