a lady today cut down her brug and said i could have the cuttings. i have like ten 5-6 foot stalks. can i root these like they are through the winter or do i need to cut into smaller pieces and root that way? i really would like to keep them whole if possible.
any advice welcome. thanks.
dont know the name of it.
Help please
I am no expert but from what I have heard you can root any size cutting you want, I would try them whole.
Since they're so fresh, I would try to root them whole. I had that work with quite a few this year. You will have to take of most if not all the leaves, and make sure you plant the bottom. Don't laugh...I planted one upside-down last year. It grew anyway, but was slower... Good luck, Marie!
PS -- what kind is she?
all i know is shes a orangish yellow. i will try to get pics of her other one.
she says the plant was a gift to her years ago and doesnt even know the name. i know the flower starts out yellow and goes to a orangish color. really pretty.
i am gonna try them whole and if it doesnt work then i can take littler cuttings.
Cool, Linda!

That is just TOO funny
Linda, Are these getting any light from outside?

Gosh, Linda, we are on the same wave link. I'm going to use my tomato boxes to hopefully get them off to a quicker start in the spring...worked last year and i didn't even get them in the box until WAY late...
Linda how clever! When I plant up my 6fters or bigger, I have to find a tree I can rest the stalk against to keep it straight in the pot. I may use your idea of the wire screen! So clever!
Imazdi, I plant huge ones in soil right away! Just do not overwater. Strip off the big leaves. I cut the top back to a nice canopy start. 4 to 6 nodes to each branch of the Y to about 2 to 3 Ys out. I have never lost one yet!
example:
Linda, I'm going to Little Rock today and I'd like to know where you bought the pump and T valve?? Lowes? Walmart? Other?
Linda thats a neat idea and plan to try it.
alot of these do have nice big ys so was scared to cut them any really. will have to take a pic. 3 buckets full. had more then i thought. need today to go out and look at them as put them in buckets at dusk.
had to exerminate my house yesterday.
sad thing was i did notice last night one had a SEED POD . wonder if it will mature??
i plan to pull all the dead leaves and leave the good ones. i noticed alot of little new leaflets trying to come up.
i really think she cut it back way to early. the one in her neighbors yard is still in full bloom.
Linda, do you use a different bucket for each kind of brug, like a PB bucket and a EP bucket, etc?? My PB and Rosemond and several others will fill up a large bucket, but I have any other of numbers that could share a bucket. Also, do you separate the brugs when you wash them in the 110 degree water or just fill the tub with different brug cuttings???
Sherry, I know I probably shouldn't, but I have more than 1 kind in a pail. Mine are still so young that I don't have multiple large cuttings of one variety. The pump came from Walmart (thank you Vi) in the tropical fish area, cost about $7 The t-valve is part of my misting system. The pump may support more than 2 pails, there's lots of bubbling going on. I may try to add a third pail this week end.
Kell, I've never tried a tall cutting in soil, but you are several years ahead of me, I'm still learning here.
And I have to say again, the pail with air pump is not my idea. Several others have posted this method here and I have borrowed from them and improvised. The wire on top does seem to keep them separate and upright.

imzadi, my Whiskers had a large pod when I cut it. So far it is still looking good. It also had buds and them matured and bloomed for me.
Sherry, yes I usually wash them separately, but I have been known to throw 2 or 3 different ones in together. I know that you share disease that way and I'm asking for trouble but I am sooooooo lazy and tend to take short cuts.
