Hartz product almost killed Mercy Cat

Silver Lake, OH(Zone 5b)

My friend brought over her dog and he brought in TONS of fleas... infecting all five of my kitties... so, not knowing any better, I went to the Tops store and looked to see what they had for fleas and found Hartz Advanced Care. The name sounded so close to the name of the stuff I had used from the vet, that I thought it must have gone OTC so I bought it, and put it on all five of our kitties.

Then, Mercy got sick, lethargic, dull eyes, walked like 2 steps at a time, would not eat or drink anything at all. She was so sick!! Everyone else seemed ok but it was really hard to get the gunk off their fur.

Mercy kept getting sick and we took her to the vet -- well it seems that Hartz recalled the product but the grocery store kept it on the shelves. DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT! It can cause seizures and death in susceptible cats and you can't tell if your cat is going to be susceptible until the stuff gets on her.

Mercy has been "down" since November 6 and we've been giving her water with a syringe and tuna broth with a syringe, carrying her to the litter box and back, and watching her carefully. She is getting a tiny bit better each day and last night she finally drank water on her own and tried to use the litter box but missed and used newspapers instead. Now you know a cat that misses the litter box is sick...

Mercy is our pride and joy and one of our first fur children and we are asking for prayers to get her back healthy again. She is a little more bright eyed today and did drink a little water today.

What a scary thing! I went back to the grocery store and tore the stuff off the shelves and gave it to the people at the service desk and told them what it did.

Shame on Hartz, too, who simply re-packaged their same stuff with more warnings and put it out there for more people to use unwittingly maybe killing their little fur children with this junk.

Please don't give me the lecture about getting it only from the vet. We learned our lesson. What a painful one for Mercy. It's a shame.
