Angel & Dragon Wing Begonias

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Would this be the forum for postings about Angel & Dragon Wing Begonias??

Last year I brought this plant which was 2 years old at the time into the house. Boy did I have a mess all winter with falling blooms and leaves. I was so Thankful to get it back outside this past spring!! Now the time has arrived again. I don't have the heart to cut it back so I've decided to enclosed another section of our porch just for my Begonias,

Does anyone know if they require a rest period?

Well, messy or not.....they are sure pretty.

Thank you.

judy, your begonia is very pretty. And i do remember that many begonias are very messy. At one time I had more than 100 different varieties of begonias and belonged to the begonia society. But i did get very tired of cleaning up after them all the time. When I sold my house and moved to this new place i got rid of all the begonias I had left. Now I just have 1 new Rex that is very pretty. As far as I know begonias do not require a rest period per se. They will slow down their growth some in winter mostly due to lack of light. Good luck with yours Donna

Goodness 100 varieties!!! I'm impressed. I only have 10 or so varities but probably 100 or so plants, most small established plants from this summers cuttings. I don't like small pots therefore I only have the Angel & Dragon Wings. The above, as you know I'm sure, is a Dragon and it blooms all the time. I like a few Dragon and a few Angel, but I'm afraid I overloaded myself this summer, with rooting cuttings.

Did you ever try mailing them? I've gotten a couple mailed to me and they just didn't do as well as ones I've bought locally. It seemed to take a long time for them to stabilize, but I've had a hard summer so it could have just been my lack of attention. If you have any experience with this I would appreciate you advising me because I am hesitant to trade any of my begonias for this reason.

One of the bigger Angel Wings. It's actually a couple of feet taller than shown in the picture.

I have one kind of begonia. Escargot. I bought three plants, gave one to a friend and planted the other two. My cat dumped the pot, so I put it back together and now I have three plants again. LOL! Can't wait for them to get big. Yours are beautiful.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

I don't believe I have Escargot, unless it is one of my "unknowns". Brugie, you haven't even seen the tip of the iceberg!!! I have one I dearly love with salmon blooms and small dramatic angel wings but the pictures I took earlier did not turn out.

Here is a picture of just some of my babies!!! This is a four shelf stand and it is full!! lol lol

I'd say you are hooked. Just wait until the brugs have you as hooked. You will be one busy person. LOL! The foliage on the begonias really is pretty. I like lots of color, so that is why I do the brugs.

Judy that's some very nice looking begonias you've got there.

I raise a few myself and have a nice small collection of cane types, angel wings & a few rhizomatous type.

You can mail unrooted cuttings easily. Take your cutting, be sure you have at least 2 growth nodes below the foliage ,cut at a slight angle and wrap with moist (but not wet) spaghnum moss, wrap that in foil and then wrap in newspaper gentle. Send it off priorty and it should do fine.

When the cutting is received you can place it is a glass of water and perlite set it where it stays warm and average light. It should root in a 7-10 days. Then pot it up. You can also root cuttings in damp sand, potting mix & perlite

I have a rooted larger cuttings ,like a whole branch in a large gallon zip lock baggie....When it forms roots just stick it in moist potting mix and keep warm, you can place the plastic baggie over the cutting pot & all to help with humidity . It helps to prevent leaf losses, too

I pot mine in a standard MG potting mix with added peat . Most begonia's really like to go very dry before watering , when you do water-do it thouroughly.
They also prefer to be a bit root bound and in smaller shallow pots.

They don't like their leaves to get wet at all, so don't mist them or over head water them.

Your covered patio should be a very nice place for them and they should do well.

If I can help with any other questions, just let me know.

Your set up looks great!

When I get my plants sorted out we will have to compare lists and see if we need to do a trade.

Thank you so very much for all the helpful information.

MsCritterkeeper - your plants are beautiful. I didn't get as many blooms this summer as I wanted, I didn't take care of them as well as I should have due to illness.

scooterbug - what ya got to trade, now that MsCritterkeeper has told me how to mail them. If you can raise Brugs you will do well with these.

I'd love to but it is too cold for shipping now.
Maybe in the Spring.
Tnx for the offer.

Besides , My plant numbers have quadrupled this Fall.
Needless to say they are all over the house ,occupying every unused space i can find.
And I don't even start seeds until Feb.

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

MsCritterkeeper - that solid green leaf is beautiful!!!! I thank you so much for your kind offer of helping to ID, I'll probably take you up on it.

scooterbug - a space never before considered, under the bed cool touch bulbs in the light fixture. How cold is it there? We're having lows of 40 or so with day time highs in the 55-60 range. My kind of weather.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

judy, I'm considering hanging lights under the kitchen table ....... lol

It's been low 40's day and high 20's nights. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr !

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

lol lol I can't have them there... the dogs could and would get into them!!!

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

Ms Kitterkeeper, you wrote "I pot mine in a standard MG potting mix with added peat ."

I'm tired this mornng what is "MG"... wait I have it Miracle Gro, right?? That's what I use but on the Angle Wings when they are of good size, I add a little sand.

More pictures are coming...

Judy and MsC,
Your begonias are to die for! I have huge pots of dragon wing that have been so good to me this year. Brugie, I want to get the escargot in the spring. Hope this winter goes fast!

trunnels, that's a beauty and next year it will be six foot tall..lol

You all do know you can start most begonia's from rolled leaf or a leaf wedge cutting stuck in a terrarium?? :) Takes a while but it's an excellent winter project.
