Can anyone give me advice on how to plant burg seeds. I have a few that need to be planted but they are so hard I was wondering if you need to scarify them first and if so how?
Need Help Please.
Windsurfer...some of us peel each seed first before planting...others of us soak the seeds for one or two days and then plant. I personally find the seeds very hard to peel and do the later...If you do a search for seed planting you will get many suggestions from planting in rockwool in a plastic bag to using potting soil first sterilized with boiling water.
Will put up a link that might help!
Good luck, Margie

Great link , Thanks!!! - Judy
I think it is easiest to peel the seeds before soaking myself, but the smaller ones, I don't even attempt to peel.
Lots of times I don't peel at all. Depends on my mood that day. LOL!
Thanks Picturelady for the information and the link.
Brugie do you soak them before pealing? I can't imagine peeling these hard seeds would be easy.
I think it is easier to peel them dry than when wet and slick, so I peel first, soak last. If they are fresh, they peel pretty easy. I'm sure if they were old and hard to peel, I would just soak them and plant. I'm getting pretty lazy in my old age and the seeds don't seem to mind. They will grow no matter which way you plant them. These days, I probably plant more with the corky bark still on them than peeled.
I think we both are getting lazy in our old age lol
I have some seeds soaking as we type. Last time I soaked & peeled about 1/2 & didn't peel the others just planted, everything came up so I guess it doesn't really matter. I plant in soil. I have 25 seedlings from last spring's planting. (they are any where from 18 " to 2 feet now, in gallon pots)

Sounds good Bj, thanks.
How long does it usually take for the seeds to germinate? I've soaked them 36hrs. and planted them in peat/perlite about a week ago. Am I being obsessive? ;~).
Ooops...went to the link and got the answer...AND terrific information. Thanks!!!
Great information. Thanks for the link, Margie. I have it marked as a favorite as I'm sure it will come in very handy.
(edited for spelling - oops!)
