Storing my tuberose...

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I bought these from Eyes' co-op. They grew well and bloomed like crazy! I cleaned them off and was surprised to find 20-25 babies on each bulb. Storing them for the winter really doesn't concern me but I am wondering if I leave all the babies on, will they deplete the mother bulb? And if I cut them off will all the babies just die? What is the best way to store them and preserve both.

No they will not deplete the mother bulb. You can store the mother bulb and the bulblets, inside in a frost free storage unit, or even in the refrigerator if you have the space,,,packed with peat or sawdust. Just like you would store Dahlia tubers or potatoes etc,,,check once a month to make sure they have enough moisture...not wet but just enough to keep from totally shrivelling up and drying out. I've heard people will sometimes use a slightly moistened sponge in the packing material to add the proper amount of humidity...

Thank you a bunch for your answer. I store bulbs all the time but I have never seen one with so many babies on it. LOL

Hi, Badseed - I got tuber rose's from eyes co-op also and just unpotted mine last week and left the tubers in the unheated barn to dry out. I found the same thing - LOADED with tiny bulb-ettes all over the mother. I am going to store mine in an unheated attic space inside a styrofoam cooler with dahlia bulbs. The attic space stays between 40-50 degrees all winter. Didn't those tuber roses smell heavenly?? I cut off the last blossoms just before the first hard freeze hit last week - took them inside and put them in a vase of water on the bathroom counter - and they are still opening. Makes my bathroom smell like a tropical paradise..

They have the best scent of anything I have ever grown! I had them planted in pots outside my bedroom window. Since the summer really never got unbearably hot, we only ran the a/c about 5 days. I got to enjoy them the whole summer. They really did bloom profusely and smell wonderful!
