Oh Brugie

Tropical Sunset is finally going to put on a show for me. Lots of buds on it now. It is a nice healthy big plant now.

But what, if anything, do I do about this? It is the only brug I have that does this.

Holy Cow!! I've seen brugs do that on a much smaller scale, but never that much. I had one that was doing it this summer and Monika just told me to cut it off. It didn't come back. That is amazing looking. Maybe you should start a new plant and get all of that dug out of there. Unreal.............

This kind of mutation can more or less easily be broken off. It is a result of using strong fertilizers. It is not only Brugmansia, that form them. I use Brugmansia fertilizers also for Datura and a whole range of other plant like roses, geraniums.

Here is the original thread about this plant.

I did top it and cut off the shoots at the bottom and buried the plant deep when I planted it in the ground. Here is the other half of the plant.

And it's interesting base.

You do not seriously mean I should compost this plant?

Edit: Just saw Tonny's post. These had Miracle Gro when still in pots but have only had a hit of composted steer manure since going into the ground last May. What is best for them in the ground?

Shoot, I don't know. At the least, I'd try to cut some of the gunk away. If your soil is good, you shouldn't have to worry much about fertilizer. A couple of handfuls of lawn and garden fertilizer sprinkled around the base, but not close to the trunk and watered in good, just a couple of times during the summer, should be plenty.

The hummer who inhabits this plant can now breathe again. Lol. He was worried. He let me know that I was not welcome to crawl under HIS plant like that.

After it is done blooming, I will chop all of this away again and see what happens. It doesn't bother me. I just find it curious.
