help please need a source to buy from

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

i put this on the fruit forum and gonna put it here so hopefully i can find a source for one.

okay my daughters science teacher is really different and wants them to grow fruit or vegtables. they get to keep them but the choice was a random pull of things to grow.

my daughter pulled out the container bananas. PROBLEM!!!!!

my daughter tried to explain that we cant have bananas due to Me being allergic to them. yes you read right i am allergic!! could i be allergic to the plant itself also?? maybe i better wear gloves anyway with this. never thought of that till now. allergic to the source

i sent a note with her yesterday and his reply was not what i wanted to hear. either she does the project or gets an F. well i am not gonna let her get an F.

right now i have very limited funds . we donty need anything fancy or big . a pup or is it puppy?? shoot a baby banana will be fine.

does anyone know where i can get one fast ?buy one ? i live in the south and they dont sell bananas here. it will be in the school. not outside. went to lowes and home depot ( they looked at me like i was crazy) parks is out of them.

i need one and if any one knows where i can get one it would be great. THANKS

Golden, CO(Zone 5b)

Think I'd have a talk with the administration. Requiring you to buy a tropical plant, not locally available, that can cause health problems? He would definitely be overstepping his boundaries if he were in the school system here.

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

i have thought of that because i can get apples and limes and lemon and peach trees all day long here. Bananas are just hard to grow here due to heat and then you have to dig them up in winter and store them. they are not illegial here or anything its just really hard to grow them here. thats why we dont. hehe can you imagine digging a 20 ft tree every year to keep it. i cant lol.

these schools here are nothing like what i grew up in. this new school this year is run by the govermental place(savanah river site) that gets its funds from. so some of the stuff she is learning is totally new to me anyway.

gonna talk to hubby tonight as he comes home and see what he thinks. he works out of town. i am at a loss for this and dont know where to find one.

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

I agree with you both - that fella is WAY out line! Tell him you are NOTbeing uncooperative and would be happy to re-draw or trade with someone. Talk about absurd!

You poor thing - I feel you distress through the e-mail!

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Gosh that's weird Imzadi - I'm quite North of you and they are all over the place here. Course most people have now dug them up already (most put them under their houses.)

You might want to call a local landscaping company - landscaper's here and in Charlotte use them quite frequently at neighborhood entrances. I would not imagine they hang onto them all winter. I actually wanted to get a red variegated one (can't remember the name now) from a landscaper but never made the actual effort to see if he would give it to me!

Hope that helps!

Moscow, TN(Zone 7a)

imzadi,
Here is a place to buy banana seeds. Very reasonable prices and they ship quickly.Or if you want a plant I have a pup of Cavendish you can have for postage.

HI, also some seeds and plants on eBay-think that teacher is just a TAT unreasonable.....

I have bananas (fruit and their parents) growing in my yard. I'll send you a pup! But I'm with everybody else here - he's being a jerk!

Modesto, CA(Zone 8b)

Imzadi....give that nutty teacher the name and number of your local U.C. Cooperative Extension Agent and recommend that he get a list of LOCALLY AVAILABLE plant varieties before giving this assignment to his kids next year.

Have your daughter write up (as part of her assignment) exactly what you had to go through for her to get her "assigned" plant for her project! She better get an "A" that's all I have to say! If she doesn't....go over his head! I would!

I would also have a chat with the Principal regarding that teacher telling you your daughter had to do bananas or get an "F" even after you told him you were allergic. That's just unreasonable, and possibly dangerous....not to mention an open invation for a law suit (if you got sick). That ought to jog the Principal to action!!!!!

It's on it's way! When I told my husband about it he went straight outside, dug it up and helped me package it. It is now in the hands of the mailman.

LMK if it works for y'all, please.

Thanks!

This place is the greatest! Good luck on your project!

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

oh My gosh i am in tears. you all make it so hard not to cry .

i did go to the principal today and much good it did me. he said that he could get her excluded from the project and no grade at all. Well thats not good either. so i said i wouod go above him but hubby tonight said he would help her with this and all i had to do was find one. he said it wasnt worth it as the way it is they have been doing this type of project for years and it isnt going to change.

THEN i come on to update you all about this sitation and theres one in the mail!!!! see i am in tears.

Dstarz oh my i dont know what to say but THANK YOU!!!! oh my i cant type now and i am usually ther one who never stops talking.

Oh you all are the best and i am at a loss for words.

imzadi, you just made my month! If you check the brug forum from around a month ago someone did something like this for me and I, too, was brought to tears.

I'm grateful I could help out. Let me know how it works out. Please?

Modesto, CA(Zone 8b)

See? Just like Momma told us....what goes around..... :~D

Atascadero, CA(Zone 8a)

I think recently they called it 'paying it forward' . . .what a gal Donna. . .hope all goes well with the project. . .better get an 'A'. . .

Palmyra, IL(Zone 5b)

If you need another let me know.It still isn't right for the school to make you have a plant in your house your alergic too.And you certainly shouldn't have to buy a banana.I'm glad I'm not in your shoes, the school and I would be going around and around. When my son was in school, I never could have bought a banana,I didn't have the money. Thanks,Jody

My DH, Ernest, wanted me to post a picture of the pup's momma so you and Tess can see. So here goes. This is a bunch of nanas that came off it this year.

I'm glad you are getting your banana plant. I posted some sites to order from because for some reason when I opened this thread, it only gave me the first few posts. After I posted I happened to go back and saw that there were a bunch of posts and you have a plant on the way. Congrats. I hope it doesn't give you any problems. I can't imagine being allergic to bananas. Aren't bananas supposed to be the worlds most perfect fruit? LOL!

Here's my DH with one of this year's shining accomplishments. This bunch came off a plant in the same group as the pup. (7/5/04)

Oh my! I would have bumped heads with that teacher big time.

How long is your school year? Does he actually expect her to grow a plant and have it produce bananas? I certainly hope her grade does NOT depend on that. Lucky kids that got the beans and peas.

She won't be producing bananas this year. ; - > This variety has to grow for 2 years without a frost or freeze before they will produce any fruit.

The tough part of all this now - that poor family has to schlep this plant back and forth from home->school->home every single day of the week!!!

This teacher obviously hasn't got even so much as a clue!! Unless you get a dwarf variety (which tend to be rather pricey) these things get to be 16' and taller. Can you see putting THAT in the car every morning before school?!?!? Just the pot alone is going to be nightmarish to handle, forget whether it gets any height to it.

I would be SO tempted to find the biggest banana tree i could find in the neighborhood, buy it and then haul it in on the back of a truck...
These teachers kill me nowadays with their attempts at education.
Can't help but wonder if the project is to help aid his desire for a filled greenhouse?
Keep us posted,
Jen

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

no not the whole year thank Goodness. pleasse odnt send any vibes this way like that. LOL if it has to produce hes out of luck on alot of things.

i am bumping heads. this school is weird. but i am not moving due to a school. i will deal with it. my blonde hair will be grey but i will deal. lol

perfect fruit and i am allergic to it. BOO HOO i cant even tell you what one tastes like. i cant even eat banaba flavored candy because actaully the flavoring has a little buit of true banana in it. so you all enjoy it for me.

all i know is she better get an A or i am gonna raise cain.

my DH says we will get through this. he will take her and pup to school in the mornings in the pick up and i will pick her and the pup up. i can see all these plants at school.

i dont know who would remeber this but its showing my age.

sex ed classes the egg baby or sugar babies. carrying them around and making sure they survived was bad enough. now my daughter has a plant baby.

i am off to make a birthday cake( yes i know its 11.00 at night) and wrap gifts as my daughters 13th birthday is tommorow. time sure does fly!!!!!

Thanks to you all for the support and wonderful kind words. chocalote cake anyone?? lol Marie

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

okay now i need to know how to grow it and does it need anything special as in food or what. i will supervise hubby and daughter with this and water it but wont touch.

i am glad i own a truck and a blazer. can you imagine the other kids and these plants and small cars. a apple tree? oh my i just dont see how this is gonna work.

i see myself wrapping it in a blacket every morning and getting it ready for school so it doesnt get a chill.

my Dh is laughing at me right now. Yea wait till he has to start taking her and the pu to school. LOL

i am still thinking of going to the school superintendent over this. I have done seed projects and veggies( lima beans ) over the years but actaul fruit trees. which i had that lima bean for three years. no one eats lima beans here. hehe

fruit trees.

again i will give a heartfelt thanks to Donna( dstartz)!!!!!!!

i promise we will do our best by this little pup.

We don't do anything to ours other than hit it lightly with the automatic sprinklers every other night in the summer. But it is in the ground.....

It will also like it hot and sunny. (They are a tropical.)

Did you know that the banana "is technically regarded as a herbaceous plant (or 'herb'), not a tree, because the stem does not contain true woody tissue" *?

"The Banana tree trunk is a false stem formed by tightly wrapped leaf sheaths. The Banana itself is from the berry family. A berry is a simple fruit having a skin surrounding one or more seeds in a fleshy pulp." **

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Good luck, and keep us posted. We'll want photos, or course. (How about one of the teacher and principal so we can blow them up and make dart n=boards out of them?)

Premont, TX(Zone 9b)

Donna , just wanted to say that was so kind of you to do this for marie.God bless you.
Elva

Modesto, CA(Zone 8b)

Donna, do you think your DH will allow Marie's daughter to print the pics you posted and use them in her "report" to show the nice man who sent a banana pup all the way from Texas for her project? This nutty teacher is clearly not a gardner or he would know that hauling plants around like that is totally detrimental to their health....duh! And he's a science teacher? Aren't they supposed to KNOW something about what they teach???

In any event, Marie, all our prayers and good thoughts are with your family during this STUPID assignment. We should all pray for God to gift that teacher with some common sense....LOL! Karen :~P

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

oh my dont be giving me any ideas on the principal or teacher. lol

yes i plan to take pics along the way.

Hey Donna thats a great idea about using these pics for her report. Let me know if i can. Thanks Karen. its only right for her to say where they come from.

Well this man is from germany so we will see what other assignments come my way. Nothing agianst GERMANS !!! just saying this is where he is from and maybe things are different over there then here.

who knows whats next.

you know i have asked alot over the years but i have never ever been more deperate or GRATEFUL for a banana in my life. and i am allergic to them.

my Dh is the vioce of reason around here and said if i take it any farther then what i have it may make it bad for Tes to go to that class. I hate to think i would be causing her to have a bad time in school due to a project.

especially when she loves school ( A B student ready to go to college already). so we will deal with this. i rather live through a stupid project then make waves for her.

but any way look later tonight or tommorow for a pic of her birthday cake. i promised i would post it on here.

now to go get ready for the 13th birthday party. Hugs all Marie

Tess is more than welcome to print the pictures. Would you like them without the writing on them?

Funny, her teacher is from Germany, so is my DH's family. (Last name 'Startz') A squarehead demanded...I mean, asked....a squarehead provided. (I'm half german, too, so I can say that. ; - > )

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

Donna either way is fine.

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

okay here my daughter is with her cake yesterday

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

You are really gracious to go along with that nut of a teacher...and what an angel Donna is...but I hope that for future classes you take this issue "to the top". Thank goodness she didn't get Mangosteen or Mango or Lychee or.....!

Your daughter must be the best in the class to have this pressure put on her!!!

Carol

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

Well I'm real happy she got a banana... I just found this thread.. and I could only send a dwarf.. they aren't good fruiters..it seems she also has the makeings for a good report on it also.. mangos are real easy to root.. and I once sprouted a tamarind seed I got out of a hot soup.. I wonder what the purpose was of the assingment.. Gordon

Modesto, CA(Zone 8b)

The assignment? For the idiot teacher to prove his superiority over others! I don't know, but it sure seems to me that an assignment that is realistic and "fun" for the kids (and maybe even the parents!) would become "famous" with the kids and something they looked forward to......what a concept huh?

Jackson, SC(Zone 8a)

the assignment is designed to drive parents crazy. Lol

any way the banana is in a pot and plan to take pics this afternoon as first day it went to school. to cold this morning to take pics. got up and no electricty and it was 28 in the house and outside. thank goodness for gas stoves.

okay from what i understand we are growing the baby banana puppy to learn about cloraphyl ( no clue how to spell it) the way leaves use oxyigon and other air elements. if leaves start then thats a bonus . its also designed to get kids in to growing things.

now my daughter is loving it now because its her banana puppy. reminds me to wash my hands and dont touch.

saw the teacher in the parking lot this morning and he commented oh you are letting her do the project. yea duh i dont want her to have a F or no grade at all. Its totally stupid but i rather her do it then fail. trying to get anywhere with this school is like pulling teeth from an alligator.

okay look for a pic later today.
you know its hard trying to help her with this and hubby is doing wonderful but cant touch. we had to buy a new little shovel and watering can and everything because i know its hers and i cant touch just in case i break out. oh the trials of being allergic to something.
