What is the best time to gather seeds and how long does it take to germinate? Thanks.

Hello Treehugr, the best time to gather the seeds is in the Fall after the hulls split, but before the seeds fall, as they might get lost in the mulch. Of course, if you have a lot of seeds that might not matter. The seeds you see in the picture are the only ones my tree had last Fall.
You should plant them right away, before the inner skin gets hard, or they might not germinate. It takes a month or two for the seed to germinate. It first sends a root into the soil and the upper part, or green sprout takes a lot longer, because the big heavy seed has to split in order for the stem to come up. I have found that if I bury the seed completely it just rots, so planting them with the eye down but half out of the soil works best.
Of course you have to keep the soil moist at all times. I keep mine indoors because I have discovered that squirrels like them, there is nothing more frustrating than having your sprouted seed which you waited for such a long time destroyed by a squirrel.
Of the five seeds I planted, four have sprouted, but the green stem is not up yet.
Well, I hope this helps you, please let me know how it works for you.
Sincerly, Josephine.

I can't wait to give it a try. Too bad we will have to wait a 'nother year to gather seeds. Around here you can't leave them on the ground too long or parasites will get to them.
