Brugs now in house for winter

Boulder Creek, CA(Zone 9a)

Two of my brugs had many blossoms coming on, but the rain was knocking them off. So I brought them inside the house and provided bright light. Although some leaves are yellowing and falling off, the plants seem very happy. The blossoms are getting bigger and new leaves are apearing and getting bigger also. One should bloom any day. Here's my question: Will they need a dormant period in a few months? Looks like I will have many flowers for at least 6-8 weeks. Should I then chop them back and stick them in the dimly lighted garage? Should I be feeding them? Thanks.

I keep some of my "special" ones growing all winter, they never seem to need a dormant period. Sometimes bloom inside, not big flushes, but maybe 3-5 blooms. Brightens up your winter blahs....

Sounds like you will have lots of pleasure this winter!! I know Monika has told us that they do go dormant in their native environment for I think she said 6 weeks.

Kell, after moving all this plants inside, I'm ready to go dormant for about six weeks also. LOL

ahelms,
I'll second that .... wouldn't it be nice to go dormant until winter is over ...... and it's time to plant outside again .....

Oh Ada, LOL! I went semi-dormant a couple of weeks ago and if I can get by with it, my plans are for staying that way for about four months. It really does feel good not having to drag that garden hose around.

I'm still digging Brugs and vines. I can't believe any one person thinks they have to have this many plants. LOL

I second that, Ada! I finally gave up. I can't get anything else in my little greenhouse, and I have to think about the potentially spectacular seedlings that will have to go out there in late January or early February.... Its going to be very interesting.

Gretchen, I say everyday "that's it, no more" then I try to squeeze more in.

Gee, I counted and I only have 135 pots/plants. I do have some cuttings in jars, trying to get roots, tho'.

Hibiscus - The 135, are those all Brugs???

Gee Gloria, you need to have a few more. I do not even want to count mine. Funny in the summer I can't have enough. Then in winter reality hits!

sr...I just noticed that you are in Boulder Ck. My daughter lives in Scotts Valley, not too far from you and she has a brug, that was planted a couple of years ago as a 2-3' plant...leaves it outdoors, in the ground all year around and it is about 10' high now.
I think the brugs like the humidity of your area and would be fine left outdoors if it were in the ground!

We are a lot higher than Scotts Valley here in Boulder Creek. Hard freezes to mid to high 20s happen every few years. I don't have that much yard space anyway. So I whack 'em back and start over every spring.
