Titan Arum, Bunga Bangkai (Corpse Flower) (Amorphophallus titanum)

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

Beautiful bloom. Did it smell bad when you were next to it? I have another kind resting right now. Can't wait to see just how bad the smell is. I sure love the foliage on them.

What is the little reddish colored square at the base of the plant? Is that a cut out??

The woman in the picture is my friend Bonnie, a Master Gardener. She got there shortly after it opened, and judging by the pained expression on her face, I'd guess she got a strong whiff of the "perfume." This blossom was open for about 36 hours in July 2004 in the arboreteum of the Stephen F. Austin University, Nagadoches, TX. Yuska

I've wondered about that little square, too. I have an inquiry out to try get some info. Will advise asap.

Eeeeewwwww! But facinating! I was wondering where her clothespin was! There's a plant right out of a Star Trek episode...(except that it would communicate telepathically and have a superior intelligence....then eat people!) LOL

langbr, you asked about that little square. I found out that the staff of the arboreteum cut the opening for propagation purposes. Pollen was obtained from a plant that was blooming at the same time in Connecticut. I wonder when they'll know whether viable seeds have been produced. Yuska

How interesting!! Sure wouldn't want to get your head over the top of it to collect pollen that way!! LOL

She's so lucky! I wish I could see one of those up close! Even if it does smell horrible

Evidently there are more of them around than we might have thought. The new version of this ISP (sbcglobal) has a image search feature. I put in "corpse flower" and found six pages of pictures.

I would be interested in any cultural info on this plant,as I am buying a bulb, thanks

I myself have no experience in growing this remarkable plant but here is an article that should be helpful -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titan_arum

After reading the article, scroll down to the external links - there are specific discussions as to soil types and other pertinent information.
