Rattail Cactus

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Does anyone have Rattail Cactus or Living Stone Cactus for postage or trade?

TUCSON, AZ(Zone 9a)

Sequee, can't you find any there. We have a nursery here that carries them. Would be happy to pick some for you. I don't have any (to many other cactus hehehe) but if you want them, just pay me for the plants and shipping. Let me know Binky :))))

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

I'll be checking around. I just spotted them in the PDB and was hoping someone was doing a "clean up" and had some for trade! I know I saw the Living Stone somewhere, but I've never seen the Rattail. I'll be on the lookout, though!

Mirpur (A.K), Pakistan(Zone 9b)

I have seeds of few other cactus, if you are interested.

I have a young rat. I looked under is tails just now but they all seem to be attached-no babies. Sorry.

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

Forgot the rat! Lol!

Sequee. . .I'm at work, but I have 1 more pot of rat tail that I haven't traded yet. . .can email you a pic when I get home to see if you'd like it. . .LMK Janet

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

Janet, can I just yank a tail, cure and start it?

Atascadero, CA(Zone 8a)

I just spearate them at the joint. When I repotted mine for the umpteenth time this spring, I just cut a bunch of them in 6-8 inch pieces and then left them laying out to calous and then stuck them in cactus mix. They root very easily. I had about 8 pots of them and I threw away a 5 gallon bucket full of them. . .

This was taken in July and it's put out a ton of new growth since that was taken. . .but, I think your's is a larger cultivar from the looks of your pic. Janet

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

I have one that looks more like yours that was labeled mousetail.

You didn't throw 5 gal of cactus into the compost lol?

Atascadero, CA(Zone 8a)

Sorry to say I did, I would have still been trying to get them all in pots. The plant in that picture is about 1/3 of the mother. . .but it was rootbound and needed to be trimmed out. It really took off after that. . . . I could make a ton of rootings again right now, but it's fall and I'll wait until spring. . . ;-) Janet

Sequee,
Janet sent me some of these not to long ago and they are growing so well.
Really nice healthy plants.
Janet, I love them and I've had so many comments from my family about my little rat tails.

Janet - That's EXACTLY what I'm looking for - in fact, THAT's the photo I was looking at when I decided I HAD to have it! Too funny! Guess I shoulda just gone to the source with my tin cup out! That never even occured to me!

I just checked your trade list - you've got mail!

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

So, When I went looking for rattail cactus on the database, this is what I found.

Now I wonder what ours are?

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

Check out rat-tail cactus! These are those - MUCH better lol!

San Diego, CA(Zone 10a)

There are so man "almost" the same name around this place. Seems like whatever you put in there is a daylily or ten by the name! Lol!

I found mine. Golden rat tail, hildewinteria auriespina. (I hate to admit this but I looked at the pot and low and behold I had tagged it.)

If I ever get all the plants sorted out, it will be a miracle.

Carmel, NY(Zone 6b)

That's funny! It's always fun to stroll through the data base, though, isn't it? And you are SO right - it's absolutely maddening all those Daylilies! Who knew???

Atascadero, CA(Zone 8a)

I'm glad you found your tag frogsrus, as I also have one of those 'Golden rat tails' someone gifted to me from one of our favorite cactus shops in Morro Bay, but alot of their stuff isn't marked. Now I know what it is. . .been trying to find out for over a year. . I think the problem is the names that get tagged on these are just common names. . .there's a whole bunch of cacti people call rattail. . .when I was looking for mine about 20 years ago, a San Diego nursery sold me one they called rattail and it turns out to be Echinocereus pentalophus, commonly known as Lady Finger Cactus, according to Xenomorph when I begged for ID awhile back. . .go figure...

Looking at PDB and I think mine is this one; looks just like the second picture, just a younger specimen

Sequee. . Sorry I didn't get this posted last night when I got home. Here's the one I have left of my starts and there's a few in another pot I can throw in. . .less for me to have to baby through the winter. Didn't read my email yet, so will get back to you when I do.

jcangemi, I think those are two different names for the same cactus-just to make identification even more fun, you understand. How is a poor schmuck gardener supposed to figure it out if the experts cannot agree?

Kingston, GA(Zone 7b)

Would any one happen to have an extra start of the Golden Rattail cacti to share? I would love to have one in my cacti collection. If anyone does have one, please contact me and I will see if I have any plants to offer in exchange that might interest you. Thank you! :)
