Murrells Inlet, SC(Zone 8a)

I bought one of these today from home depot. Sorry I don't have a pic of it to post here. these are in the pitcher plant family and are quite interesting to say the least.

Hopefully it will come through on this one.

Those are some cool looking pitchers on that plant. I just did a search online and found that they aren't a cheap plant to purchase either. Congrats. I hope it does well for you.

Hey Shirley,

Great to see you out and about. I paid $19.99 for this one at home depot. I thought what the h@#$ i'll buy it and give it a shot. If it dies it dies but i'm gonna try itout anyway.

I did some online searching for info on how to take care of it because alI I got was some conflicting stories from 3 people at HD on what to do. I found a site that specializes in carnivorous plants and a big misconception that a lot of people have is that these types of plants HAVE to HAVE insects to survive. Not true according to what I read.

This is how it reads. Carnivorous plants get little nutrients from the soil and though bugs are a dietary supplement that helps the plant to grow faster they are not required for the health or survival of the plant and any human food such as raw hamburger can and most likely will kill your plant.

I think maybe i'll go to the pet store and get some crickets as a treat for this one once or twice a month,if I can manage to keep it alive for that long.

I agree with you about the prices for some of those online plants though. I bought an anthurium from Lowes that is attached to a lava rock. I paid $13 for it. I then visited the webpage from the back of the nursery applied tag and to buy the same plant directly from them costs $29 plus s&h.

David, nice to see a post from you, Either you have been very busy or we haven't been at the same forums. Should be a very interesting plant for you, good luck with feeding it. I must go back an apple crisp for church potluck. Back when i can. Donna

'Miranda' is a very nice and "easy" Hybrid which has large sized pitchers (largest on mine is about 9" long). Yellow jackets seem to "love to die" in those pitchers.
Keep bright without direct sunlight, keep growing medium always moist and water with plain water without any fertilizers in it. It likes humidity and may not grow new pitchers if not enough humidity can be provided.

David,
I have a couple nepenthes that are thriving in low light in my greenhouse. I think you will be plesantly surprised how easy they are to grow.
