I am so excited. I have been so sad about my messed up garden from Ivan. I went outside today and found this. The leaves are shredded from the hurricane, but I have a bloom!!!!!!!!!

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Great pic rylaff .
Could your secret be a special mixture of air-bourne micros and bugz courtesy of Ivan ..... ?
Ya think ?
Hang in there Kiddo , I will all come back.
If there is any thing I can do to help , just ask

Now I'm getting homesick for when I lived in Fl ...... boohoo

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

Thats it! I little ocean spray, a little roof tile, the neighbors tree, the other neighbors branches. Mix it all well, and voila!!!! Actually, I took citrus fertilizer and mixed it with the cheap stuff and added some epsons salt.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Are you actually close enough for ocean spray ?
If so I'm gonna pack myself in a big box and ship myself to you ........ get ready for company that may never leave ......... LOL

Pocahontas, TN(Zone 7b)

I have never seen anything like that before... amazing!!!

Scooterbug, only when the wind blows enough. Actually, I am a couple of blocks away from the bay and 5 miles or so from the Gulf of Mexico.

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Hmph! Well then , I'll wait to find digs closer to the ocean (or Gulf, I ain't that fussy).

Anyway, thanks for the info ,it is very useful. Maybe it will be easier for my Posse of 'naner Rustlers to approach from the beach ......... LOL

The endeavor was postponed last spring 'cause Head Deputy Rootdoctor was involved in other projects.(like work)
Seeing as he has been seen out and about lately , maybe we can get things rolling soon.

BTW, when do you normally go out for the evening ?

hehehehe * Evil Snickers *

What we are advised to do with the thing is that once all the fruit is formed and no further development takes place, the flower part at the tip has to be cut off to enable the enhancement of the size of the fruits. The bunches, they say, will always be in odd numbers. Check it out.

After the fruit is harvested, the plant is to be cut off to enable promotion of off shoots. The centre part of the stem of such a plant is used for cooking. It is highly fibrous and is good for people suffering from kidney stones, while it washes away any impurities in the intestines.

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

Dinu, I did not know any of that!

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Thanks Dinu, I thought that's what you were supposed to do with them.

My nanas are NOT growing
I cut off the bloom but the nanas are not getting bigger
It maybe because its too cool in the GH(55 minimum)
Too little natural light(short days)
It maybe cause nanas just have some sort of problem growing in Northern New York.....I don't understand why....LOL,LOL LOL
I havent fertilized it since it came in the GH,maybe I should.....
they are still almost the same size they were when I cut off the bud thingy
can it go semi dormant ,WITH nanas on it,and the nanas rippen in the spring?

Niceville, FL(Zone 8b)

Doest it take like 6 months for the banana to mature? I know that bananas are very heavy feeders, especially pottasium. I make up my own special blend of fertilizer that includes tropical fertilizer and epsom salt (magnesium).

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

CC , It believe that I read somewhere that the nanas take a long time to mature. I would suppose the dark days and cool temps would not enhance their growth. Keep us posted. I have my first pups potted up and all input will be a great help.

This is one of the links I'm using for info (so far ) http://www.aandbtropicals.com/page30.html

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Oh I know it takes a long time, probably a LLLOOOONNNGGGGG time up here
But will they rot by having the growth slowed down so far?

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Can you put a grow lamp on it?

You can handle this CC , since you know how to grow brugmansias.
If it was mine I would just hold water back to prevent rot and not fertilize.
It does not need either in regular amounts while it is not growing.

-IMO- This knowledge is my experience with many plants BUT NOT BANANAS [so far ].
I would assume the same would hold for them though ('-'?)

The lady at the tropical fruit place down the road said if the temps fall below 50 degrees the bananas won't grow. If the tree sets fruit during a cold spell the nanas won't grow, like they are stunted. My Dwarf Cavendish made 9 hands of bananas which have grown pretty big, but under those there are 8 or 9 hands of teeny bananas that haven't grown an inch. They set during the cool, rainy spell we had. My Ice Cream banana has 8 hands on it now, we've not fallen below 65 degrees at night and these bananas are growing like crazy.

Bananas still growing.
