I've just bought a baby tree labelled as Morus nigra, but the leaves don't seem to tally with any of the pictures I've found.
There are two different shaped leaves on my tree.
Firstly here is 'juvenile' leaf, one that came before the others
Is this Black Mulberry please?
Hi Philomel, I have two Black Russian Mulberry trees with leaves looking exactly the same as what you are showing..the leaves are still showing both shapes...mine have grown very fast and are now very large trees,[approx 6 yrs old]..were only small when we first planted.. the fruit is delicious, shows bright red when immature then matures to black...
ps the branches on the trees [ trunk etc.,] is the most beautiful subdued burnt orange color...this has developed more since they have matured..
Thank you Marion, that's really useful to know. I've known of several mature black mulberry trees and know I like the fruit very much, but they are in the UK and I'm here, so I couldn't compare my baby one.
I'm really looking forward to it growing up and fruiting! Thanks for all the description. Lovely that we'll get full value from the attractive bark too and that they mateure so quickly - can't wait :)
