Plants, wildflowers to plant under Spruce & Balsom trees..??

About 14 yrs ago we planted Balsom and spruce trees in the back of my home--about 60 of them..Then, we trimmed all the lower branches. They are about 20'ft tall or so now.
There are needles on the ground and in some areas high grass...I was wondering if there were any ideas of what could be planted underneath.(Wildflowers or plants)Zone 4-5
